I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter:
1. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Each year, cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is about one in five death; imagine the whole world?
B. Specific Purpose:
1. To persuade my audience that smoking tobacco with nicotine should be banned everywhere.
C. Thesis Statement:
1. Today we will be discussing the harmful effects of smoking.
D. Preview Sentence:
1. We will first discuss the problem, the harmful effects of nicotine in the environment, then the causes as to why it is the leading preventable cause of death in the US and finally, the solution to our problem.
Transition Sentence: Let’s begin with the problem.
II. Body
A. Problem: Smoking is still legal even though many people are dying from it.
1. Side effects of smoking.
a. Smoking causes cancer.
b. Smoking causes a complicate pregnancy.
c. Smoking affects the environment.
Transition Sentence: Now that we’ve established the problem, let’s discuss what the causes are.
B. Causes: Due to its position of being legalized.
1. The tobacco industry provides revenue to the government in the form of taxes.
a. Although it is the most dangerous legal drug, it provides many jobs to people.
b. Tobacco is an extremely important element to help function the economy.
c. We choose to not prevent these deaths due to its ability to help our government to gain revenue in order to shape society.
Transition Sentence: Now that we have discussed what the causes are, let’s move on to the solution.
C. Solution: Substitute nicotine
1. According to organic fact since addiction occurs from the smoking part, there are healthier alternatives to smoking tobacco such as herbs.
a. Mullein, a smokable herb, has been long used as an herbal remedy to respiratory problems including asthma.
b. It is often a common herbal remedy for ear infections, relieve sore throat, cough and pleurisy.
c. For half a pound, you can get mullein for $9.00 when purchased in its organic form. Which is non-comparable with its price to tobacco, not to mention non-organic.
d. Doesn’t necessarily have to be smoked, but its method of use can also be used as an infusion or tea.
III. Conclusion
A. Review Main Points:
1. Today we have discussed the problem of the harmful effects of nicotine, then the causes as to why it is the single most preventable cause of death, and finally, the solution to the problem.
B. Tie Up:
1. Although tobacco is the most preventable legal cause of death, those addicted to it are actually functioning the economy by providing revenue to the government in a form of tax, however, we can change the death part of it by replacing it with herbs in order to provide a stable economy while preventing deaths.
