OL 670: Final Project Guidelines and Grading Guide
Overview The final project for this course is the creation of a report that analyzes your strengths and areas of improvement and experiential gaps as a leader. The final product represents an authentic demonstration of competency because the report is based on an incremental personal reflection across the array of leadership concepts covered in this course. The project is divided into nine milestones, which will be submitted throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Eight, Nine, and Ten.
Main Elements In Modules One through Six and Eight through Nine, you will reflect in a personal journal on various aspects of yourself as a leader. From these journals, you will create an overall Self as Leader assessment report, due in Module Ten. The main elements of the Self as Leader Report are:
• Description of your strengths, areas of improvement, and experiential gaps as a leader. Apply learning from across the course in explaining the importance of the areas of focus selected.
• Development plan to address your areas of development • Explanation of the expected value of the plan

Format Milestone One: Manager Versus Leader In Task 1-‐3, you will submit your first Self as Leader journal entry. You will reflect on how you have been a manager and a leader. With which are you more comfortable? What do you need to develop to be competent as a manager and leader in the Knowledge Age? The post should be at least two paragraphs, applying relevant course learning from the current module. The journal entry is graded separately using the Journal Rubric. Milestone Two: Emotional Intelligence In Task 2-‐2, you will reflect on your ability and comfort with authenticity as discussed in the course and the outcome of your Emotional Intelligence Quiz assessment. Clarify implications of each for your development and effectiveness as a leader. The post should be at least two paragraphs, applying relevant course learning from the current module. Milestone Three: Leadership and Exemplary Leadership In Task 3-‐2, you will assess your abilities and experience to determine your progression in Collins’s levels of leadership and competency in the five practices of exemplary leadership. What kinds of learning and experience will help you develop in terms of each model? What is the value of that development to your success? Milestone Four: Levels of Leadership and Exemplary Leadership In Task 4-‐2, you will assess your natural approach to leadership relative to the five leadership styles described by Goleman. What are related areas of development? How might your style impact how you approach a new leadership position? If you have explored the optional resources, discuss any useful suggestions for development that you may have found. Milestone Five: Team Membership In Task 5-‐3, you will reflect on your approach to team membership. Consider your approach (assertive or reserved), natural role, strengths in contributing, and areas where you are not comfortable. Assess your current skills as a team member: What can you leverage to effectively lead a team, and what areas do you need to develop or adapt? Milestone Six: Conflict Management Styles In Task 6-‐3, consider your typical approach to conflict, informed by the Conflict Management Styles Quiz. In what situations is it effective? When would a different approach benefit you? Are you able to manage conflict to support collaboration and effective decision making? Given this reflection, what areas of
development are important to your success? The post should be at least two paragraphs, applying relevant course learning from the current module. Milestone Seven: Change Leadership In Task 8-‐4, you will reflect on your reaction to change and how that might influence your effectiveness in leading change. What aspects of change leadership would be easy and which would be more difficult for you? The post should be at least two paragraphs, applying relevant course learning from the current module. Milestone Eight: Moral Leadership In Task 9-‐3, you will consider the Moral Leadership in Business article, pp. 14–17 in the PDF version. With complete candor, assess your commitment to moral leadership. It is easy to say that you would always make the moral choice. Is that truly the case? Under what conditions might you be, as the article described, the businessman in the plane who said that his job is “to be a liar”? Remember, only your instructor will see this post. Rubric Requirements of submission: Written components of projects must follow these formatting guidelines when applicable: double spacing, 12-‐point Times New Roman font, one-‐inch margins, and discipline-‐appropriate citations. The paper should be 4–5 pages, not including cover page and resources. Failure to adhere to these requirements of submission will result in the paper not being graded.
