The University of Illinois Jazz Faculty is an electrifying, experienced and professional nine-member group made up of the U of I School of Music Jazz Faculty. Directed by saxophonist/professor Chip McNeill (chair), the incredibly talented group consists of trombonist Jim Pugh, pianists John “Chip” Stephens and Joan Hickey, drummer Joel Spencer, trumpeter Tito Carrillo, bassist Larry Gray, and saxophonists Ron Bridgewater and Glenn Wilson. This ensemble of talented professional educators reaches deep into the rich and diverse experience of each of its members for musical and educational growth and learning. Each of its members have toured with the masters of jazz including Chick Corea, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Woody Herman, Nat Adderley, Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, and Jon Faddis, to name but a few, as well as many other groups of musical note such as Steely Dan and Frank Sinatra. The repertoire represents an amalgamation of the sounds of American jazz and popular music as well as fusing the daring and colorful harmony of American jazz with pulsating rhythms of Latin Jazz. The UI Jazz Faculty not only explores the legacies of jazz pioneers such as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and John Coltrane, but also guides our students toward current trends in the idiom, performing, educating, and recording numerous works from contemporary artists, as well as original compositions.
