Analysis of Team Communication

My group company was Total 90 Indoor Soccer Arena, which was quite effective because all members were committed to their respective tasks and were also very helpful. Team members of the group comprised of Emma Hawn (CMO), Rachel Preston (CMO), Akram Mirzoev (CFO), Karl Moritz (CEO), and I acted as the COO for the group. I consider my group to be quite effective because all the members were quite cooperative and always ensured to communicate in a prompt and appropriate manner. Besides, the group ensured to implement the various communication techniques while accomplishing some of the tasks that we had to complete during the semester.

The team was able to achieve cohesiveness because all team members realized right from the start that face-to-face was the most valuable form of communication, which also explains why the team held numerous meetings. Team members regularly held meetings during the evenings at the business school, which provided each team member to understand the overall goal of the team, including the respective tasks that each team member had to complete. Face-to-face communication was quite effective because it provided each team member with the opportunity to contribute toward group projects by sharing their ideas freely. This form of communication also facilitated engagement and exploration among team members, thus enhancing the overall outcome of group projects because communication was effective. This form of communication also enhanced team members’ listening and talking skills because they could face one another, connect through words and gestures, critique each others’ ideas, and explore other alternatives for the various problems and challenges that the group faced.

Other than face-to-face, the group also used e-mails and group text messaging when members could not meet physically. However, technology came in handy because the group used Huddle, a powerful and commonly used communication tool by some of the leading organizations in the world such as proctor and gamble, Yale University, NASA, Panasonic, Samsung, Shell, and Nokia, among others. Huddle is private cloud-based communication software that enables people to collaborate in and out of the organization. This tool facilitates web conferencing and virtual meetings, which made it possible for the team to perform its group discussions without members having to meet in a physical location. Using this tool, the group could discuss various issues, share files, manage projects and tasks, store files, and enhance security of the project. Huddle not only saved the group time, but also facilitated convenience because we did not have to send the same information to each group member. Huddle was effective because it enabled the group organize tournaments, allowed team members to work from home, delegation of tasks, planning of tasks and storage of important information.

More significantly, my team appreciated and applied the principles of fierce communication to ensure effectiveness in all our projects. My team used these principles to improve communication because all members were able to face reality and tackle our challenges in a prompt manner, as well as to appreciate the power of silence. In particular, these principles proved effective when the group had to solve various challenges that we faced a long the way. To solve those crises, the group also heavily relied on the idea of groupthink as it encouraged brainstorming and use of critical thinking to solve problems. The tutorial on management communication also played a critical role in ensuring effectiveness of the group because it provided members of the group with an opportunity to discuss the various factors that facilitate successful communication in a group setting. Similarly, the tutorial on the effective use of PowerPoint slides was helpful because it helped each team member to appreciate the need to communicate effectively through use of slides.

My group was also effective because team members also appreciated the power of active listening. Through active listening, each group member was able to learn and think about what other members had to say, which significantly enhanced the quality of interaction and discussions. The group had the opportunity to learn and apply the three essential skills in active listening, which include attending, encouraging, and following. These skills also helped speakers to understand what they need to talk about, including what to avoid such as focusing the discussion on oneself. Through my team, I also learnt how to relate with the media, especially during crises situations. In particular, I learnt what one should say and what one should avoid. More importantly, the group learnt the need to apologize effectively in situations that call for such an action because that helps to maintain healthy relationships with others.
