1. Literacy: Literacy is integral to student achievement in all subject areas and grade levels. In 300 words or less, describe three specific strategies you have used in the past to incorporate Balanced Literacy into your classroom instruction. If you have not had the opportunity to do this, describe your literacy philosophy and how this applies to your approach to teaching.

Common Core: Choose any Common Core or North Carolina Essential Standard (http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/curriculum/) and compose a script (500 words or less) for a lesson you might teach on that standard. Scripts should focus on the introduction to new material and/or direct modeling segment of your lesson. Additionally, include a clear lesson objective, as well the questions, activities, and/or assessments you would use to ensure student mastery of the objective.

Be sure to clearly label your document as "common core essay response."

* 3. Cultural Competency: In Mecklenburg Schools we believe we can educate every child, every day for a better tomorrow. In the words of our superintendent, Dr. Heath Morrison, "We must meet the individual students where they are, then move them forward. Our students come from many cultural contexts and backgrounds. To meet their needs requires deep, thoughtful cultural competency." Describe, in 300 words or less, how you plan to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with all of your students and their families in order to successfully teach all of your students.
