ESSAY #3 WRITING ASSIGNMENT:

BUILDING CREATIVITY

The sources you will use in Essay #3 are:

“The Creativity Crisis,” by Bronson & Merryman

“Schools Kill Creativity,” by Ken Robinson

Introduction to the Assignment

In Unit 3 you have read about the ways in which today’s education system affects the creativity of individuals, and the ways in which creativity may be taught and brought to life, or, to the contrary, suppressed. The authors of the articles believe that the creativity of American youth is decreasing, and propose several causes of the decrease in terms of the current education system. They also present ways in which the education system could adopt teaching philosophies and methods that would spark creativity in students.

Essay Assignment

In Essay 3 your focus will be on the ways in which education can discourage or encourage students to build creativity. Based on the ideas presented in the unit articles, choose one idea that you agree or disagree with about how creativity is being suppressed in current education systems and one idea that you agree or disagree with about the way in which creativity is or can be encouraged and taught. In other words, in this essay you may totally disagree, agree, or agree/disagree with two of the authors’ contentions about the discouragement or encouragement of creativity in education. The Thesis of the essay will be a statement of the points you’ve chosen to discuss and your viewpoints about them.

In the Body of the essay you will explain each idea clearly as you discuss it, synthesizing evidence from both articles in your analysis (even though the idea came from one article, both articles raise similar issues). To deepen your discussion of the idea, your own experiences in education will be valuable and appropriate as development in this essay.

In the Conclusion of the essay you can express your perspective on whether or not the majority of education systems will change philosophies and methods in the near future, and why you think so.
