Final Paper Prompt
Global 157 Global Media Spring 2014
Use concepts from the course (such as the public sphere, civil society, ideology, framing, connectivity, new sociality, monetization of information, neutrality, etc.) to make your own argument about the role the media play in shaping public debate about current issues. In your argument the media must do more than simply broadcast events. Analyze how the media influence the debate or impact the outcome in some way. Some possible topics could include:
Verizon v. FCC and the FCC’s recent rulings on net neutrality
The Keystone XL Pipeline
The right to privacy and NSA warrantless surveillance Ukraine/Crimea/Russia crisis
Citizens United and McCutcheon decisions on unlimited campaign contributions.
Requirements
A hard copy of your paper is due to Felicia by 5 pm on Tuesday June 10. Please do not email your paper. Papers should be about 1200 words or 4 pages long (8.5 x 11, double spaced, 12 font, 1 inch margins). Pay special attention to the structure of your argument, with a clear argument and evidence to support. Please proofread - spelling and grammar mistakes will lower your grade. Use quotes and proper in-text citations for ALL sources referenced. Include works cited at the end.
Below are some important tips on how to do well on the final paper:
1. Include a unique topic-specific title at the top. 2. Put the thesis in the first paragraph.
3. Don't just give me your opinion, use evidence from other sources (media) to support your thesis. Constantly relate evidence back to thesis for clarity.
4. CITE EVERYTHING, AND CITE MORE THAN LESS.
5. More analysis, less summary. Last time there was too much summary of the issues. Don't just narrate how events are told in the media - analyze how the media shapes and interacts with the issue at hand. 6. Steer clear of first person.
The next set of topics are a little more challenging and more global in scope. To make it easier read up on an issue you are interested in, starting with the articles Dr. McCarty and I have posted on Gaucho (May 19-25).
