My Position; My Definition

Choose one word from the pair of words you chose below and illustrate/support an argument of

definition with supporting examples. Your rhetorical purpose is to inform your reader – through

a summary and analysis – that your argument defines the word you chose and illustrates the

significance of your word.

Words to choose from include:

*Power *Genocide *Slavery *Racism

Key features of Definitional Arguments

A claim involving a question of definition

A general definition of some k ey concept

A careful look at your subject in terms of that general definition

Evidence for every part of the argument

A consideration of alternative views and counterarguments

A conclusion, drawing out the implications of the argument

Argument Goals:

Write an argument of definition. Your argument must present where you stand on what a word means. Choose one word from the pair of words you chose above. Then,

write an argument of definition over what that word means. So that your reader understands what the word means, you will need to develop a topic that helps your reader

understand the word as well as its concept and/or meaning. Under a topic you must achieve the following:

1. Provide a question or questions to introduce the argument.

2. Provide your own definition and a formal definition.

3. Discuss how your definition aligns or does not align with a formal definition.

4. Use the definition(s) to build an argument – i.e. topic – based on how you interpret such definition(s).

5. Use an example(s) to establish the foundation for your argument.

In a nutshell, your goal is to prove what your word means. You achieve this goal by interpreting the definition(s) and demonstrating what the word means through a

concrete (real) example(s), which are actual real, researched examples that highlight your word. Examples establish your argument. However, example

limitations exist though, such as no political leaders for power, no holocaust for genocide, no constitutional amendments for freedom, no abortion for citizen, no American

revolution for liberty, no modern day figure for rebel, no colonial America for slavery, no law enforcement for racism. If you chose to define your word with multiple

examples, at least one example must be prior to 1900.

As you write your argument, establish:

A clear position that opens your paper.

Examples that guide readers to understand your interpretation of the words.

What is defined as legitimacy? (In other words, why is it right?)

Where and when does the conflict occur? (In other words, an opposing point of view?)

Optional: are there any historical factors/events that help to establish your definition?

Guideline: Your paper must be in MLA format. You must integrate at least 8 creditable/scholarly/academic sources of your own. You can only have one block quote in

your essay, if needed. (Quote will not count toward page count.). Finally, you essay must be at least 4 full pages or more.
