NOTES:
Old time dance:
Time: May 28, 2014
Irish music:
June 3, 2014
> 1. A) May 27 7:38pm runciple spoon
> B) 6 playing, sitting in a small circle fiddle (fiddle), flute (tin whistle), button accordion, guitar, flute
> C) presentational; seamless harmonizing; stop between songs, casual conversations between songs, conversations with audience, eye contact with each other, fiddle player started movement started, combination of both memorization and improvisation, not all players play at once, 10min play time and break, talk about everyday life 2tunes so far
> 3rd song the flute guy started and everyone followed, feathered beginning, different numbers of players playing in one movement, instrument switched for 1 guy; he had 4 different flutes, (it probably suited the piece better), parts where only one or 2 instruments play and then people join in
> 4th time elder lute player started
> Continuous melody, more flow than dramatic.
> 5th time a girl joined and someone else left
> Fiddle guy
2. Kind of songs are carousels, happy songs, upbeat, no start no end (feathered beginning and end), Irish songs
> 3. Circular structure reflects that only participants of the circle were playing; meaning of performance is social gathering and bonding with players and audience, personal connection, communication through music and words; participatory and presentational behavior. There is a boundary we feel as audience but at the same time they are not excluding us; comfortable with being looked at
