COURSE DESCRIPTION: Planning and Analysis phases of the Systems Development Life Cycle. Focus on software

development life cycles; entity relationships, data flow diagrams (DFD), prototyping and other forms of data or systems

modeling. Designing, selecting and installing new systems for end users, includes cost/benefit and value-added evaluations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course students should:

• define the systems analyst’s role and responsibilities in an organization;

• describe the building blocks of an information system, i.e., people, data, activities, networks, and technology;

• define systems planning, systems analysis, systems design, implementation, and systems support;

• describe a phased approach to information system development and describe cross-life cycle activities;

• compare and contrast the systems development life cycle and systems development techniques, including

object oriented design and analysis, information engineering, prototyping and Joint Application Design;

• define and perform data modeling, process modeling, network modeling and explain why they are important

techniques;

• use and explain the importance of a project repository;

• become acquainted with a CASE tool (MS Visio)

• become acquainted with group project work, sharing of ideas, utilizing resources, and solving problems with the

power of group collaboration

GRADING: Your final grade will be determined by a combination of factors including total grade points and classroom

performance. Total points available include:

Participation @ 10/wk 100 points

Exam 50 points

Assignments 260 points

Team Project 230 points

Final 100 points

TOTAL 740 POINTS

The approximate grade range is:

A 90-100 %

B 80-89

C 70-79

D 60-69

Grade Disputes: If you wish to dispute any grade assigned you must do so in writing (email).

Late Assignments: All late assignments result in a loss of 20% when turned in. Assignments more than 7 days late

are not accepted.

PARTICIPATION: There are 100 points (10 per week) available for class participation. In order to receive these

points, students need to fully answer the discussion questions and respond to a colleague’s post with thought and

insight. Students are expected to work independently, except on the Team Case Project and where instructed

otherwise. One-liners in the discussion area or in the assignments where we are asked to explain or clearly define our

answers, will not be given full credit.

TEAM PROJECT: There is a 230 point team project where students team-up to design an information system for a client. Detailed

instructions for these projects will be handed out separately.

TESTS: There is 1 exam and the Final. All testing is open-book/open-notes. The tests will consist of multiple choice,

true-false, and short answer/essay questions pertaining to material covered in homework, the team project, discussions

and the textbook.

expected to be courteous and communicate with each other in a respectful manner. Obstruction or disruption of

teaching, research, administration, disciplinary procedures, or other institutional activities, including the Institution's

public service functions or other authorized activities on institutionally owned or controlled property is strictly

prohibited by Oregon Tech’s code of student conduct and may result in disciplinary action.
