Study Skills Survival Guide Instructions
The purpose of this exercise is to help you build strong study habits by actually applying the concepts we are discussing in class to your other course work.
Here’s what I want you to do: You are essentially creating a “packet” of information. Each of the following STEPS should be completed on a separate page. Please include a cover page with your name, date and a creative title for your Survival Guide. You will submit the assignment online.
Please label each of these STEPS in your work (i,e, Step 1: Time Management; Step 2: Studying)
STEP 1 Time Management: Use the Time Management Log Exercise website: http://www.angelo.edu/services/first_year_experience/schedule.php (there is also a link to this in your assignment instructions on Moodle (same place you got this document). You will type directly into the form. Follow the instructions (you don’t have to print it out). What do you notice about how you are spending your time? THEN, look at your planner from last week: What “opportunities, challenges, and complications” did you face? THEN write a reflection of your observations. How did it go? What adjustments did you have to make? How did they work?
STEP 2 Studying: Read the article, “Think You Know How to Study? Think Again.” Try some of the strategies this week (maybe you already use a few of them). Discuss your experience using them. Did they help? Did you modify any of them to suit your needs better?
STEP 3 Note-taking: Employ one of the note-taking strategies we discussed from the web resource Study Guides and Strategies in one of your other classes. Type up your notes and include them. Then identify which strategy you used and write a one-two paragraph reflection of your experience with this note-taking style.
STEP 4 Memory: Choose two of the memory strategies from Study Guides and Strategies and try them out for one or two of your classes (even if you don’t have a test coming up). In two paragraphs, discuss your experiences.
STEP 5: Test-taking: Carefully review the test-prep and test-taking strategies from Study Guides and Strategies. Discuss how you can use some of these techniques in your classes this semester (be specific).
