Running Head: AMERICA LABOR UNION 1
C. Please make the indicated writing corrections. Your English writing is improving, but there is still much work to be done. You don’t have a grasp of what Olson says in Rise and Decline of Nations. Please review my comments and rewrite the paper after reading Olson. Then resubmit the paper.
The Eastover miners are situated in Harlan County, USA. This is one of the bloody sites characterized by fierce battles between miners and coal companies. The Eastover miners organize one of the biggest strikes and manage to succeed through the union. The reason for their success can be explained through Mancur Olson’s theory. This theory basically describes effectiveness of working as masses through public unions compared to working as lobbying groups . The Olson theory basically explains the benefit of using many parties in achieving a desired goal than grouping the parties into a handful of groups. Grouping the individuals, on the other hand, would give a lot of pressure to each group or lobby as it tries to achieve the desired results.
The ability of yjr Eastover miners to win the strike is because of public union . From the cases, it can be argued that working together is bound to bring positive results that sticking into groups and letting the groups work as if it was an independent individual entity.
Eastover miners organized a strike in which all miners had to take part in the strike process. Each of the members contributed towards the final output. Each of the members has had bad experiences with the company and hence is ready to do anything to ensure that his or her issues are addressed. Some have witnessed their close relative die in the mine and nothing being done. Each member of union also witnesses bloodshed as the company fights with the workers. This means that each member is bitter and is willing to work optimally towards facilitating the strike. Because of this, the impact of every worker is significant and felt by the company, and that is why the strike is believed to be the largest strike. Based on the aforementioned and documented evidence, it can be concluded that public sector union workers present an effective lobby while the Eastover miners do not because of its efficacy an d the ability to balance the country’s economy in response to queries from citizens.
You're talking about a specific group of miners, so use the definite article here.
Avoid duplication. You already say that they are miners, so you don't need to repeat that.
In writing about a literary work, it is often preferable to write in the present tense. Nevertheless, when you are talking about the past relative to the narrative in the work, then it is necessary to use the past tense. Do not change tense unnecessary. You use "organized," which is in the past tense, then you shift to "manage," which is in the present. It is probably better to change "organized" to "organize" because you're describing events that occur in the present in the narrative.
No.
Olson doesn't discuss public unions. He doesn't differentiate between unions and special interest lobbies. He views unions as examples of lobbies. The reason unions succeed, according to Olson, is their use of selective incentives. In the film the union members (especially Lois) pressured each other psychologically, accused each other of loafing, and engaged in strike violence against replacement workers, whom they called scabs. Olson argues that without such selective incentives applied against nonconformists or noncomplying workers, union actions will fail. He doesn't disucss public sector unions, but he would apply the same arguments to them. He doesn't think that public sector unions are more effective than lobbying groups. He thinks that they are lobbying groups, and that they are less effective than elite lobbying groups that have few members and large benefits per member. An example of an effective lobbying group is, then, Wall Street. Another one is the auto industry.
Olson predicts that small groups will be more effective than large ones because (a) the benefit per member is larger so that there is a better motivation to join the group and (b) the costs of organization of the group are higher for large groups. Small groups are easy to organize.
Rework this after you've read The Rise and Decline of Nations.
Their union is not a public sector union. The public sector unions organize employees who work for the government: police, firemen, teachers, college professors, government clerks, transit workers, post office employees, and similar kinds of workers. Eastover is a private concern; its employees are private sector workers.
Use "where" for geographic location. Use "in which" for abstract concepts that have no location like "strike."
At several points there were remarks that not even six workers showed up for a picket line at various times.
Again, don't switch from past to present tense in a single sentence for no reason. Change "was" to "is."
You've got two independent clauses here, so you need to follow the rules to eliminate run-on sentences. See the presubmission checklist and this web page: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/runons.htm
Now you're distinguishing between public sector unions and the Eastover miners. Please reframe your discussion according to the last revelation.
