Week 2

1.

Some motives appear in every culture around the world, while there are some motives that appear only in specific cultures.

Find a research paper that studies the expression of one of the universal motives or incentives in a cross-cultural context. Select the motive or incentive from the list below.

•  Aesthetics •  Control environment •  Emotions •  Facial expressions •  Fears •  Goal setting •  Self-concept •  Sexual interactions •  Social milieu

Identify the motive or incentive you selected. Respond to the following:

•  Summarize the experimental design and the findings reported in the research article. •  Discuss whether the author(s) finds cross-cultural differences or similarities.

Use your own words and cite your sources in full APA citation format. Your submission should be about 150 words or two pages. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting. In addition, respond to at least two classmates with thoughtful comments or questions. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module. See the Course Calendar for due dates for initial posts and responses. Compose your work in a word processor rather than typing directly in the message field. You will

2.

Consider this example. A novice, but very talented opera singer has been asked to perform at Carnegie Hall. She feels very honored, and simultaneously, very intimidated by the prestigious venue. She has practiced for months for this day and is well-prepared. However, when she opens her mouth to sing, no sound comes forth. She is physically healthy.

Based on your readings, post a response to the following:

•  Discuss what you know about arousal and performance in relation to the example. •  Speculate about the possible role of arousal state in the opera singer's inability to produce a sound.

Use your own words and cite your sources in full APA citation format. Your submission should be about 200 words or two pages. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting. In addition, read any postings already provided by your instructor or fellow students. Read and respond to the conclusions drawn by at least two of your classmates. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module. See the Course Calendar for due dates for initial posts and responses. Compose your work in a word processor rather than typing directly in the message field. You will be able to save your work frequently and proofread it more easily. Evaluation Criteria Answers are evaluated based on the SLA Discussion Rubric . Discussions comprise 22% of your final grade.

3

In this module, you read about the evolutionary context of motivation.

Based on your readings, post a response to the following:

•  Select one of the following behaviors and explain how it is a product of evolution by natural selection.

º  Affiliation º  Aggression º  Fear º  Mate selection

•  What would you identify as the inducer or motive for the behavior you selected? Provide examples to substantiate your response.

Use your own words and cite your sources in full APA citation format. Your submission should be approximately 200 words. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting. Read two of your colleagues’ posts and respond respectfully to what they have written. Do you agree or disagree and why? Please remember that you must support your position with references. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module. See the Course Calendar for due dates for initial posts and responses. Compose your work in a word processor rather than typing directly in the message field. You will be able to save your work frequently and proofread it more easily. Volkow et al. (2011) report that positron emission tomography (PET) results reveal that addicted subjects have an imbalance between dopaminergic circuits related to reward, conditioned responses to drug cues, and dopaminergic circuits related to executive functions such as emotional control and decision making.

Read Volkow et al.'s article and select a single graph or an image from the paper. Be sure to cite the number and title of the figure. For the figure you select, respond to the following:

•  Explain how the figure supports the main result about an imbalance between the circuits.

For example, Figure 1 has six parts from which you can choose one. Upon selecting one of the six parts, you should describe what is represented on the figure or graph and how it supports the idea of an imbalance between the circuits that relate to reward, conditioned responses to drug cues, and to executive function. Deckers describes two distinct scenarios that might impact personal success. Scenario 1: Above average intelligence coupled with average motivation to achieve success Scenario 2: Average intelligence coupled with above average motivation to achieve success For the two scenarios, respond to the following questions:

•  Consider each scenario and provide an argument explaining which scenario is most likely to lead to personal success. •  Support your argument with research evidence from the textbook or other readings.

Your answer should be at least 150 words. Use your own words and cite your sources in APA citation format. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting. In addition, read, reflect, and comment on the arguments posted by two other classmates.

Week 5

1. Researchers must often think about the needs continuum to conduct effective studies of motivation. In this activity, you are expected to consider the different points along the needs continuum and the theories that might relate to these points. In the Excelsior College library, find three research articles published since 2000 that discuss the role of need in human motivation or that describe a needs hierarchy in humans. Building on the content you learned in the three articles, construct your own needs hierarchy that is consistent with the findings reported in the three articles. In your initial post, address the following:

•  Describe and explain your needs hierarchy. Be sure to give examples for each level in the hierarchy. •  Discuss the key findings in the article that led to the construction of your needs hierarchy.

Use your own words and cite your sources in APA citation format. The distribution of weights for this discussion will be as follows:

•  Three research articles are selected. (15 points) •  All articles address the role of need in human motivation or describe a needs hierarchy in humans. (15 points) •  Content from the three articles is used to construct a novel needs hierarchy that is consistent with the findings reported in the three articles. (25 points) •  The key findings in the article that led to the construction of the needs hierarchy are discussed. (25 points) •  All sources are cited in APA format. (10 points) •  Responses to two classmates’ posts analyze their novel needs hierarchies. (10 points)

2.

To understand the needs continuum, it is important to recognize the role of different inducers in motivation. Inducers can originate from biological or psychological foundation, or may have their roots in evolutionary mechanisms. In this activity, you will select a need and discuss the biological, psychological, and evolutionary aspects of that need. Needs range from purely physiological, such as hunger, to the psychological, such as the need for power. In Chapter 8 there are seven psychological needs listed. In this discussion, we examine how evolution might use a biological inducer as the basis for a psychological need. The goal is to show how a psychological need, seemingly far removed from biology, may be founded on a biological need or foundation. Respond to the following:

•  Select and describe or define a major psychological need that motivates behavior. Provide a real world example of the need and the associated behavior. •  Using the information you have acquired from earlier modules and research, explain how this psychological need may be based on a biological need that has been selected for and adapted over time. Conclude by demonstrating how satisfying this need increases the evolutionary fitness of the individual.

Evaluation Criteria Answers are evaluated based on the SLA Discussion Rubric . Discussions comprise 22% of your final grade. The distribution of weights for this discussion will be as follows:

•  Describe or define a psychological need and provide a real world example. (20 points) •  Identify a biological need that may have served as the basis for the psychological need and explain how this may have been selected for and adapted over time. (40 points) •  Demonstrate how satisfying this need may increase the fitness of the individual. (20 points) •  Analyze two posts by classmates and, citing motivation theories, explain why each proposal is logical and supported by the data. If the proposal is not, provide theory and information that would make the proposal work. (10 points each)

3.

For this activity, use the same article you selected for Learning Activity 1 in week 3. Review the article and address the following:

•  What is the main hypothesis or the research questions addressed? •  How do the research methods address the hypothesis or the research questions? •  Discuss how the research method used in the article addresses intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. •  Discuss shortcomings in the research methods used or in the presentation of the results. Are there other questions that you would like to see answered but which were not addressed in this article? •  Cite all sources in APA format.

All content for this assignment should be written in your own words. Direct quotes are strongly discouraged unless you use them specifically to introduce an idea that you plan to explain in more detail in your own words. Write your response in a Word document and submit the document to the dropbox. Evaluation Criteria Answers are evaluated based on this rubric. Learning activities comprise 16% of your final grade. The distribution of weights for this activity will be as follows:

•  Identify the main hypothesis or the research questions addressed. (15%) •  Discuss how the research methods address the hypothesis or the research questions. (25%) •  Describe how the research methods address intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. (25%) •  Discuss shortcomings in the research methods used or in the presentation of the results. Are there other questions that you would like to see answered but which were not addressed in this article? (15%) •  Write in your own words. (10%) •  Cite all sources in APA format. (10%)

Week 6

1

Saucier developed the Mini-Marker 40-item set which is a rapid approach to gaining a sense of where your personality falls along the OCEAN set of factors for describing personality traits. For this discussion, you will complete the 40-item Mini-Marker set. Complete the 40-item Mini-Marker set; it is available in your textbook (Deckers, 2014) in Table 9.2, p. 235. Then, ask three others—a close relative, such as your child, sibling, spouse or partner, and a close friend—to also complete the set. Read through the list of terms and think about how your results might look. After you and your three additional participants complete the set, you should collect the data and compare them. Based on the results, respond thoughtfully and in your own words to the following discussion questions, being sure to back up each statement of fact with cited sources.

•  Critically examine the results for your completed set and provide your scores for each of the OCEAN factors. Discuss whether the results are similar to or different from the results you expected for yourself. •  Are your results similar to any of your other participants’ results? Did this surprise you? Why or why not? •  Do your usual preferences and behaviors seem very related to the personality factors on which you scored high? In other words, do your behaviors or reactions and the things you select appear to be driven by (motivated by) your personality? Give examples to explain your response.

Your original post should be about 250 words in length. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting, and to cite, in APA format, any sources you have used. In addition, thoughtfully and objectively critique responses from two of your peers. Be specific in your critique. If you find something your peer said to be interesting, state specifically why. If you find an error in something your peer said, politely point out the error and cite the sources supporting your statement. Be sure to focus your critique on the facts presented and not on the person or anything in the response that may be interpreted as opinion. Please note that opinion is not asked for in any of these questions.

2.

Sensation-seeking is a trait that does not fit neatly into the OCEAN Five-Factor Model. Sensation-seeking persons tend to have one aspect of personality in common: risk taking. In this activity, you will determine your potential as a sensation seeker. Visit the following website and complete the Sensation Seeking Scale test developed by Zuckerman (see Deckers, 2014, p. 235):

•  Sensation Seeking Scale. (n.d.). Science: Human Body & Mind. BBC website. Retrieved from http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/sensation/index.shtml

After completing the Scale, address the following:

•  Briefly discuss your results and whether you feel they accurately reflect your sensation-seeking potential. •  After completing the Scale, has your opinion about sensation seekers altered in any way? Explain your answer. •  Think of someone you know who seems to fit the mold of a sensation-seeker. Discuss this person with respect to the four factors: thrill and adventure seeking, experience seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility. (Do not identify the person by name.)

Your original post should be about 250 words in length. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting, and to cite the article in APA format.

Week 7

3.

Setting goals is one of the key actions for reaching self-actualization, the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Self-regulation is a critical component for working toward and ultimately achieving your goals. Goals can be set at many different levels: High goals that require much effort to achieve and lower goals that call for less effort. Reaching performance goals or achieving mastery in a given area requires physical and psychological energy. For this discussion, you should think about two goals for yourself. One of your goals should be easily achieved and require little effort. The other goal should also be achievable but would require significant effort. Both goals should be realistic and meaningful to you. After selecting your two goals, answer the questions below for each of the two goals:

•  What is it that you want to achieve and to what extent? •  What factors about this goal lead you to believe you should pursue it? •  What are your plans for achieving this goal? How long will it take to realize or achieve this goal? •  What challenges might you encounter in pursuing this goal?

Your original post should be about 250 words in length. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting, and to cite your sources in APA format. You are able to save your work frequently and proofread it more easily. Evaluation Criteria Answers are evaluated based on the SLA Discussion Rubric . Discussions comprise 22% of your final grade. For this discussion, your grade will be weighted as follows:

•  Clear description of two goals. (10% for each goal, total 20%) •  Two goals fit the assignment criteria (one goal is easily achievable; the other is not). (10%) •  Complete answers to the four questions for two different goals for a total of eight answers. (10% for each question, total 40%) •  Response to two classmates. (30%)

4.

Over the past decade, research studies on motivation have provided insights into the roles of extrinsic and intrinsic factors as motivators. One of the more interesting results reported in these studies is that humans can be significantly more driven to perform at a higher level by non-incentivized rewards, suggesting that higher performance can be expected for subjects who are intrinsically motivated.  In this project, you will locate three primary research articles that examine the differential effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Then follow the assignment directions below. All three articles should have been published after 2000. Example keywords for your literature search might be: motivation, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, reward, and human. Provide full APA citation for each article. Your project should be between 15 and 20 pages long, not including the cover page, abstract, and reference page, in APA format.

Assignment directions:

1.  Analyze and summarize the findings in the articles regarding the relative importance of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation 2.  In your own words, briefly describe the research methods used in each of the three articles you obtained. Remember to compare and contrast methods across all three papers. How are they similar and how are they different? 3.  For each research article, do the following:

•  Discuss the kind of data collected, how it was collected, and how it was presented (graphical or table format). •  Explain which aspects of the data best support the conclusions of the author. •  Provide at least one representative graph or table that best reflects the conclusions drawn by the author(s). Describe the findings in this graph or table.

4.  For each “person” in each scenario below, assess and discuss each situation for (a) possible intrinsic versus extrinsic motivators, (b) possible emotions that might be present in the scenario, and (c) the possible motivation for the behavior from an evolutionary perspective.

•  Storeowner: A storeowner knowingly lies about the winning lottery numbers to a customer who has a winning lottery ticket. The store owner stealthily pockets the customer’s lottery ticket. •  Mother: Following an earthquake, a mother hurriedly writes a note and pins it to her baby's clothing. The note declares her love for the child. She then places her body between her baby and the falling debris from the ceiling. •  Nurse: A nurse volunteers to travel to a flood and earthquake-prone place for 30 days to help with a recent disaster that has crippled that region of the world. She is receiving no compensation for the work and is leaving her spouse and two children behind.

Attach the articles in PDF or HTML format with your Project submission if possible. If you are not able to attach the full articles, be sure your APA citation reflects sufficient information for your three articles to be retrievable. Write your project in a Word document and submit it to the dropbox. See the Course Calendar for due dates. Evaluation Criteria Read the SLA Writing Rubric to understand expectations for this assessment. The project makes up 15% of the total course grade.

Review the PSY420 Learning Activity #1 tip sheet from the Library to help your search for research articles for your Project.

Week 8

1.

From your required readings for Module 8, you should now have a better understanding of the roles that education, personal aspirations, socioeconomics, effort, along with physical and psychological energy, play in personal achievement, self-actualization, and community. Visit the United Way website and review information in the Common Good Forecaster section ( http://apps.unitedway.org/forecaster/ ). Explore the interactive map. The Common Good Forecaster Report emphasizes the importance of education in overall well-being. Examine the Common Good Forecaster Tool to view county-specific statistics for factors that are important for well-being. The well-being factors specifically listed by the Tool are health, financial stability, education, and community involvement. Using the tools on the website, put together a one-page information sheet for residents in your own community or county. Your mission is to address the four factors identified on the forecaster tool and in the forecaster document in terms of the principles discussed in Module 8. Your specific task is to provide community citizens with information and guidance to help them to understand the motivational principles that impact the four factors in their own lives: health, financial stability, education, and community involvement. You should address response costs, time costs, physical energy, psychological energy, and resources, and how these contribute to the factors (from the Common Good Report and Forecaster) that impact well-being. Your original post should be about 500 words in length. Be sure to check your grammar and spelling before posting, and to cite the article in APA format. The distribution of weights for this discussion will be as follows:

•  Include an introductory paragraph (2–3 sentences) about the purpose of the information sheet. (20%) •  Discuss the four factors and how they impact well-being and quality of life. (15%) •  Describe and explain at least four motivational principles from the required readings in Module 8. (20%) •  Explain how the motivational principles impact the four well-being factors. (20%) •  Write the information sheet in approximately 500 words. (15%) •  Respond to at least two classmates’ posts. (10%)

2.

Many factors influence success in life. Moreover, success can be defined in many ways. In this discussion, you analyze how success might be impacted in different scenarios.

Analyze each of the contrasting statements below using the information and motivational principles addressed in the required readings for Module 8. A person will be more successful if: Statement 1: S/he has many motivational resources but few intellectual resources.
