A vast amount has been written about why Muslims are angry at the West, and America in particular. Your reading activity for module 4 examines the historical background to this anger. (See Chapter 13, "The Roots of Arab Bitterness," in A Concise History of the Middle East.) The following articles address the modern dimensions of this issue from both a Western and Muslim perspective. You can access the articles by clicking the links provided below. (Complete Web addresses for these links are given in the Reading Activity for Module 4.) A Western Perspective The Roots of Muslim Rage Muslim Perspectives The Roots of Anti-Muslim Rage Muslim Rage is for Real The Cultural Undertow of Muslim Economic Rage Discussion Question Identify the main themes and issues raised in the four articles and summarize in your own words the points of view expressed. Addressing these issues in your answer, do you feel that Muslim anger towards the West is justified? Defend your answer. A Note about the Readings "The Roots of Muslim Rage" by Bernard Lewis has been selected because of the great influence it has had in the West. Published in 1990, the main arguments it contains are still widely held and have been expanded by others, such as Samuel Huntington in "The Clash of Civilizations." (http:www.bintjbeil.com/aticles/en/d_huntington.html). You should be aware, however, that there are many important Western critics of Lewis's views, such as Edward W. Said, author of "The Clash of Ignorance." (http://www.bintjbeil.com/articles/en/011018_said.html) Links to the articles by Huntington and Said, which are not required reading for this discussion activity, can be found at the end of the short article "The Roots of Anti-Muslim Rage" by Omayma Abdel-Latif. If you are interested in reading more about the topic of Muslim anger at the West, go to Google, and search for "Muslim Rage." You will find a very wide range of articles on the topic.
