Essay # 4: Media Analysis Essay
First Draft Due: Monday, May 5
Final Draft Due: Wednesday, May 14
(by 5:00 PM in the English Department, UH-322)
We live in a culture that is saturated with images and advertisements (magazines, commercials, online, billboards, bus ads, etc). The Composition of Everyday Life suggests that the “barrage of images in our culture dramatically influences how we think, how we live, what we value, what we believe” (158). However, we rarely analyze them beyond our initial response to the message or the products being advertized. Yet our book further notes that by analyzing an image, “we can better understand how it works, how it conveys meaning, how it conceals values and beliefs. And we can also better understand how that image relates to the world around it. In short, the more analytical we become, the more we see” (158). Consequently, we will be exploring one type of media for our final essay: printed advertisements (magazine or online).
For this essay, you are to analyze one full-page advertisement from either a magazine or printed out from the Internet and examine its components carefully and critically. It is important that you make a claim about the overall advertisement and not just describe what it is that you see.
When considering your claim, it is often helpful to ask: what is the advertisement selling besides the product itself?
Consider the following as you select your advertisement for this essay:
-Color -Logos -Use of text -Design
-Setting -Ethos -Lighting -Where the ad is found
-Tone/Mood -Pathos -Race/ Gender/ Social Class
You want to choose an ad that strongly exhibits a few of these characteristics; however, you will NOT be writing about all of these elements. Rather, choose a few—3 or 4—(from the elements listed above or ones you observe on your own) to analyze in your essay. You might want to consider pages 174-181 in The Composition of Everyday Life for invention questions and ideas for analysis. Outside research is not necessary; however, you may choose to use credible outside research if it will help to prove your points.
Furthermore, over the course of this semester we have practiced developing specific details and examples to illustrate our main ideas. For this essay, we will practice keeping the same level of specificity while being concise with our language. This will help you to hone your writing skills and cut out extraneous or vague language. Consequently, this paper will be ONE FULL PAGE, single-spaced. I will not read anything past the first page (expect the works cited on page 2). This essay should be written in third person and be focused, with a clear, identifiable thesis statement that articulates an argument.
Requirements:
· 1 page, single-spaced, 10-, 11- or 12-point font
· Follow MLA guidelines for citations (you must cite your advertisement on a works cited page—the works cited is page 2 of your essay).
· You must turn in a copy of your advertisement along with your paper.
· Attach all pre-writing activities and drafts
