Part I: Food Webs
1. Breakfast is always touted as the “most important meal of the day”. Draw a food web of your breakfast consisting of eggs, wheat toast with butter, apple slices and coffee with cream. Keep in mind that chickens eat grass, corn and worms (which feed on decaying plant matter such as grass), your dairy products are from grass-fed cows; and apples, coffee and corn are all pollinated by bees.
NOTE: There are a couple different ways to complete your food web
· Use the “Insert” feature to add text boxes, images, and arrows directly in the word document.
· Draw the food web on another paper, take a picture or scan it, and then copy the image onto the word document.
· Turnitin will NOT accept images or PDF files so you must place your food web in the word file, complete the rest of the assignment and then submit it.
2. Honeybees require a bacterial species in their gut to survive and cows require an Archean species in their gut to process their food. Look at your food web again and determine how many species are required (directly or indirectly) to make your breakfast?
3. If the honeybees were not around to do their job, how many species will directly or indirectly be affected?
5. Environmentalists tell us that biodiversity is important. But explain why it matters to the average person who enjoys things like hamburgers, honey in their tea, tomato soup, or toast with jam, why biodiversity should matter to them.
Answer the following questions after watching the video found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o79SdCurCLA
6. What are some possible explanations for Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)?
7. What choices can you make to help the honeybee?
