Guidelines for Writing a Research Paper

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A RESEARCH PAPER

In the Syllabus you will have read the Course Introduction below:

“Humanities is a term that encompasses a variety of disciplines that help us to understand how we function as members of a culture that exists in time and space and that has a history and a worldview (or worldviews) that allows its members to understand themselves as part of the world in which they live.”  In order to do this, we will look at "... several themes, issues, or "problems" that affect all cultures: art and material culture (the things we make to help us live in and make sense of our culture and to express ourselves), communication, technology, and other phenomena that help us form our self-image as a member of a culture."

As an aspect of "art and material culture," the intent of this paper is to examine one of the cultural productions of a given culture or era and relate it to the themes and issues we have been discussing in class, demonstrating how this product represents the self-image of the people or culture who produced it.

The project description is also given in the Syllabus, as follows:

Project (20%): Real or Virtual Museum/Cathedral (or other place of worship) Visit

You will visit any museum or cathedral (or other place of worship such as mosque or temple) in your area and write a 1,000—1,500 word paper. The paper should be double-spaced, with a title and header page, to include photographs if possible and references in the MLA format (although you may use APA format if you are already familiar with it).

Option 1

For the museum visit, you will write about a specific item in the museum (painting, sculpture, artifact, manuscript) of your choosing.   Place the item within the context of one of the periods discussed in the text or in one of our conferences and explain how it relates to its particular time frame/period.  Describe the object.  What is the thematic content?  What broad assumptions about human nature does it make?  Does the object reinforce the dominant values of the time or undermine them?  You are encouraged to do additional research, although you must cite your sources in the MLA format.

For the cathedral or other place of worship (eg temple, mosque, etc) visit, you may write about a specific item in the building or about its architectural style in general.  Place the item or the building as a whole within its historical context.  What ideas and values does the building evoke?  How is the building similar or different to other places of worship built around the same time?  You are encouraged to use additional research, although you must cite your sources in the MLA format.

Option 2

If you are unable to make a personal visit by reason of your location, you may do an online virtual tour.

 Virtual Tour Suggestions

For those of you unable to go in person to visit a museum or cathedral, below are a few suggestions for you to explore of sites which offer a virtual tour. You are not limited to these particular sites, however, and are perfectly at liberty to find one of your own, following the guidelines laid down in the Project Descriptions section of the Syllabus.

University of California Museum of Paleontology

The New Acropolis Museum, Athens: Online Collections

Roman Open-Air Museum Hechingen-Stein

University of Mississippi Classics Collection

American Treasures of the Library of Congress

Collections of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Alexander Palace Russian History Websites

The Museu Galileo (History of Science)

Chicago Museum of Science and Industry

Smithsonian Virtual Exhibitions

The American Museum of Photography

National Gallery of Art

The Louvre

The Vatican Museum Online Collections

A selection of Cathedral tours is also available.

Option 3

I understand also that some of you have limited options for accessing such sites and perhaps not enough time to examine materials carefully enough to come up with a detailed essay. So, I am proposing a third option, which requires a bit more creativity on your part.  Using the resources you have available (texts, internet, etc), imagine that you are an extra-terrestrial explorer, on a scouting mission to determine the status of the planet Earth and its inhabitants. You have no previous experience of what a human being is and are prohibited by your orders from making direct contact with the living population.  What can you determine from your observations of the planet about the nature of humankind?  Give examples from aspects of culture that we have been discussing in the course, such as art, architecture, music, writing, etc, and submit an evaluation to your superior with your analysis.

Make sure you read the descriptions carefully and include in your essay all the main criteria: description, historical context, thematic content, relevance to human values at the time of construction, and insight provided to human nature as a whole.

The paper should be double-spaced and include relevant references, bibliography and photographic evidence if possible.

This paper is due at 2359 CET on Sunday of Week 8.

IT IS A REQUIREMENT OF THE COURSE THAT YOU SUBMIT YOUR PAPER TO TURNITIN.COM FOR PLAGIARISM ASSESSMENT BEFORE FINAL SUBMISSION TO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS FOLDER.   PLEASE SEE THE SEPARATE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE THIS SERVICE, ENTITLED 'INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING TURNITIN.COM'.  PLEASE NOTE: YOUR PAPER WILL REMAIN IN THE TURNITIN SYSTEM UNTIL THE CUT-OFF DATE AFTER THE END OF THE COURSE, BUT YOU MAY MODIFY IT AT ANY POINT UP UNTIL THIS DATE.
