First let me say that I am thankful to those who serve in the military- following orders and enlisting with the intention of protecting our freedoms is noble. I don't understand the necessity of war in a modern world. It is an inevitible that we will have defend ourselves- but with advances in communication technology and economic consequenses I don't see the need for violence. Technology has come a long way. Weaponry can strike at very specific times and locations, and drones and satelites allow us to see more than ever. I think the focus of our advances should be in non-lethal weaponry. Non-lethal rounds and gasses for dispersing riots are already being used- there has been talk of EMP's as a possibility to knock out enemy communications. I think more of these ideas need to be used in conjunction with current military tactics, especially when we are facing more guerilla warfare and insurgents and not visible, uniformed armies. Wouldn't it be better to somehow chemically sedate a suspected area, so troops could go in and extract the militants without resistance or civillian casualties? It might be possible in the future.

I focus on the good things that are being done, and put my energy into getting involved in things that build community. I choose to focus on how we are the same, not how we are different. I believe that hatred is passed down by generations- slurs and stereotypes are picked up by children at an early age. So are grudges- the wars of our fathers shape the way we feel towards each other. For example, on both sides of a war, loved ones are lost and the enemy blamed. Those children grow up with a hatred and sometimes a vendetta against the group they deem responible. Early education of tolorance and good examples set for our children is key to breaking the cycle.

I think our military does as good of a job as it can trying to protect civilians as much as possible. The current enemy tends to blend in more with civilians that make it harder for the military to separate them from civilians but, the use of our satellites and special intel we use to help locate the enemy forces does give us a slight advantage. The only way to avoid civilian deaths is to not go to war, but then again that might still end in civilian death.

I think the best way to achieve this is to live life with as much of a positive attitude as possible. Also to remember to be positive and respectful to others and it may rub off on the next person. You know the saying one good deed...if everyone strove to do one good deed a day, it might not change the world but it could change some.
