ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
· This is an analytical paper, and thus, should contain meaningful analysis of the body of law you are examining and contain examples.
· You may either:
· Analyze the impact of one of the Constitutional Amendments on the Criminal Justice System.
· Suggestions:
· 4th Amendment (search and seizure)
· 5th Amendment (due process and self incrimination)
· 6th Amendment (right to speedy trial, confront accuser, etc.)
· 8th Amendment (excessive bail, cruel and unusual punishment)
· Alternatively, you may select some case law, and analyze its impact on the Criminal Justice System.
· Suggestions:
· Gideon v. Wainwright (All defendants have the right to an attorney and must be provided one by the state if they are unable to afford legal counsel)
· Roper v. Simmons (juvenile offenders cannot be sentenced to death)
· Miranda v. Arizona (5th amendment right against self-incrimination)
· The list of topics is non-exhaustive . If you choose a different amendment or a different body of case law and choose to analyze its impact on the CJS, you are more than welcome to do so.
· I encourage you to do thorough research on your topic and provide a number of resources.
· The assignment is due on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at NOON on Blackboard, through SafeAssign.
