EGM90 Advanced Aerodynamics Assignment 2 (25%)

Assignment 2 is to write a short technical engineering report as the aerodynamics specialist analysing the

aerodynamic characteristics of the BLOODHOUND SSC Land Speed Record car. You have been given four

EnSight datasets which provide the raw data from the FLITE 3D CFD solver at the Mach numbers 0.5, 0.8, 1.1

and 1.3 (each at zero degrees yaw and full throttle). These CFD files can be used with the post-processing

package EnSight to undertake flow visualisation and this should form the basis of the report. As part of your

analysis you are expected to develop a MATLAB program to analyse the flow inside the intake duct and make

measurements of distortion (DC60) and Swirl at the Aerodynamic Interface Plane (AIP) – a template for this

MATLAB program is provided.

The deadline for submission is 5pm on Friday 9th May on Blackboard

Your report should be no more than 8 pages A4, with the main text no smaller than 10pt and references 8pt.

The report should include:

Title

1) Executive Summary

An overview of the purpose of the report and how it is set out.

The main conclusions of the study.

2) Introduction

This section should set the work in context, and be referenced. It should include:

- Overview of the BLOODHOUND SSC and its mission objectives

- How the data you are analysing was generated (briefly describe what CFD is, what equations were

solved to generate the datasets etc.)

- What are the important aspects in the aerodynamic design of a Land Speed Record vehicle such as

BLOODHOUND

3) Methodology

Briefly describe the CFD process and the method that was employed to post-process/visualise the CFD data

with appropriate references.

How were the intake duct flow quality variables were computed.

4) Results and discussion

Present the main findings of your analysis of the datasets with use of EnSight-generated figures. Include:

- A comparison of the flow characteristics at the 4 different Mach numbers

- What aerodynamic phenomena present in the flow solutions are important (e.g. shock waves,

expansion fans, shock-boundary layer interaction….)

- Do the CFD results agree with analytical/empirical relationships that we have seen in the theory?

- Comments on the performance of the intake duct across the Mach range in terms of computed

distortion and swirl
