Agent Red and the Wolf in Scout’s Clothing:
A Fable Narrative
Many traditional fables focused on the idea that the bad guy in the story came out on
top. For instance, Charles Perrault’s original Red Riding Hood tale included depicted the heroine
being killed at the end of the story, indicating that talking to strangers will always result in
tragedy. But this fable’s point of view differs greatly from that idea. By taking a different
approach to the traditional story of Little Red Riding Hood, I demonstrate that while there is
always evil in the world, strong and clever people can prevail.
For many years, the forest had been a peaceful, quiet place to live, with virtually no
danger or crime to speak of. Unfortunately, that all changed when a group of criminals from a
nearby city discovered this quiet, secluded area and began a ring of crime and terror.
Unbeknownst to the band of thieves, one family in the forest had been training for years as a
group of elite secret agents, sworn to protect the forest and all the creatures that called it
home. The youngest agent in the family was a small girl known only by the code name Little
Red Riding Hood – Red for short. She was given this name because of the red, hooded jacket
that she wore to disguise her true identity.

One of Red’s primary responsibilities was to deliver secret files from the main base to a
remote planning station, known by the code name Grandma’s House. These files often
contained information about crimes being planned by the band of thieves. The secret files
were often hidden in freshly baked cookies, so that if anyone intercepted the messenger on
their way, they would think that it was just a young girl delivering goodies in her basket. Once
delivered to the planning base, the secret treats were then used by the lead field agent, known
as Grandma, to thwart the thieves’ evil plans.
It was a normal Saturday afternoon, and Little Red Riding Hood had just left the main
base with a fresh batch of these cookies. As she neared the halfway point of her journey, she
was confronted by what appeared to be a Wolf dressed in a Boy Scout uniform. She knew right
away that something was not right, and even recalled recent intelligence reports that detailed
some of the disguises being used by the thieves. Her years of training taught her to keep calml
as she assessed the situation.
The Boy Scout approached her and said, “Excuse me, ma’am. I am working on my
Helpful Scout Patch, and I only need to do one more good deed to receive it. Would you let me
help you deliver your basket of goodies?”
Red replied, “Yes, that would be great! I’m always happy to help out a Boy Scout.”
While the Wolf thought he had fooled Red, she knew this was really a Wolf in Scout’s clothing
and his only interest was using the cookies to gain access to the remote base, and all the
secrets hidden within.

But Red had a plan. She knew that Grandma was expecting her to deliver the secret
message, and when the Boy Scout showed up at the base she would know he was an imposter.
So Red gave the cookies to the Wolf and watched him skip off towards Grandma’s House. Once
the Wolf was clearly out of sight, Red quickly began making her way to Grandma’s House
utilizing a secret underground tunnel. Even if she was unable to beat the Wolf to Grandma’s
House, she wanted to get there as soon as possible in the event the Wolf was able to penetrate
the base’s security.
Meanwhile, the Wolf ran straight to Grandma’s House and knocked at the door. As
Grandma looked through the security peephole, she saw the Wolf disguised in Boy Scout’s
clothing and knew something was wrong. She immediately proceeded to implement the
emergency response plan that had been created for this type of situation. She pressed a red
button on the master control panel, and instantly the entire main room of the base
transformed from a high-tech control center into what appeared to be the living room of a
cottage in the woods. Walls flipped completely around, replacing planning maps with family
photos; the conference room table became a quaint dining room ensemble, and the master
control panel was now a fireplace.
Grandma knew it was safer to battle the Wolf in this secure room, rather than to
venture outside, where other accomplices could be lurking. So she proceeded to the door and
called out, “Who is it?” The Wolf replied, “I am a Boy Scout who volunteered to help your
granddaughter bring these cookies to you.”

“That is so nice of you, young man,” said Grandma, “come on in, the door is open.” The
Wolf opened the door and saw Grandma sitting on the couch. He thought to himself, “I have
her right where I want her! Once I defeat Grandma, I will have access to all their secret plans!”
As the Wolf began to approach Grandma, she jumped up from the couch, threw her
blanket aside and revealed a ninja fighting staff. “Listen to me Wolf,” Grandma said, “you can
either surrender now or I will take you by force!” The Wolf, having been trained in hand-to-
hand combat himself, barked back, “I am here to defeat you and to take control of this base,
and I will not be defeated!”
Grandma jumped into action lurching towards the Wolf and swinging her staff towards
his feet. Before the Wolf could react, the staff caught his feet, lifted them into the air and
dropped him on the floor. He braced his palms on the floor behind him, launched his legs into
the air, and sprang back to his feet. He grabbed Grandma’s arm, spun her around so that he
was behind her, and then secured her other arm. Now, the Wolf had Grandma in a bad
position. “Surrender now and tell me how where to find the secret documents!” ordered the
Wolf.
At that very moment, the door burst open and in came Red. Before the Wolf could
react, Red ran across the room and grabbed his shoulders. Then, by applying pressure with a
special ninja grip, Red dropped the Wolf to his knees. Grandma, now free from the Wolf’s
clutches, pulled a coil of rope from beneath the couch and quickly secured the attacker’s feet
and hands. Once under the control of Grandma and Red, the Wolf was no longer the big, tough

predator that had infiltrated the secret base, and willingly began to give up secret information
about the future plans of his group.
Armed with this valuable information and led by Grandma and Red, the secret society
sworn to protect the forest launched a number of pre-emptive attacks against the evil thieves,
and successfully drove them from the forest. Even though this latest threat to their peaceful
way of life had been eliminated, the secret society remained vigilant in their efforts to protect
the forest and the creatures that called it home. The moral of the story is that no matter how
much evil there is in the world, there are still good people committed to defeating those that
threaten their way of live. Stay strong and keep a positive attitude, and good really can
overcome evil.
