Course Description

This course covers database concepts. Topics include data analysis, the principal data models with emphasis on the relational model, entity-relationship diagrams, database design, normalization, and database administration. Policies

Instructor Biography I work as a Consultant performing a variety of IT and quality improvement activities for companies in San Antonio, Houston and Austin. My job is to ensure that systems are properly engineered to meet customer requirements. Prior to my current position I worked as a consulting engineer working for a variety of public and private organizations that included the US Army. Prior to consulting work, I worked at Rush Enterprises, Southwest Research Institute and spent 21 years with Southwestern Bell, AT&T, Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies. I did everything from climbing telephone poles to product and project management in addition to running a data and network-engineering center. I received a Master of Science degree from Southern Methodist University in 1999 after earning a Bachelor of Arts from Illinois Benedictine University in 1993. I have been a member of the Project Management Institute since 1999 and I am a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) a Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and Six Sigma Green Belt. I live in Spring Branch. I have a 28-year-old daughter and a 24-year-old son. Hobbies are viticulture, music and building boats. Instructor’s Grading and Class Policies Grade Definitions A = Clearly stands out as excellent performance. Has unusually sharp insight into material and initiates thoughtful questions. Sees many sides of an issue. Articulates well and writes logically and clearly. Integrates ideas previously learned from this and other disciplines; anticipates next steps in progression of ideas. Example: "A" work should be of such a nature that it could be put on display for all students to review and emulate. The "A" student is an example for others to follow. This is perfect or very near perfect work. Student is generally not absent from class. B = Grasps subject matter at a level considered to be good to very good. Is an active listener and participant in class discussion. Speaks and writes well. Accomplishes more than the minimum requirements. Work in and out of class is of high quality. Example: "B" work indicates a high quality of performance and is given in recognition for solid work; a "B" should be considered a high grade. C = Demonstrates a satisfactory comprehension of the subject matter. Accomplishes only the minimum requirements, and displays little or no initiative. Communicates orally and in writing at an acceptable level for a college student. Has a generally acceptable understanding of all basic concepts. Example: "C" work represents average work for the students in a program or class. A student receiving a "C" has met course requirements, including deadlines. D = Quality and quantity of work in and out of class is below average and barely acceptable. Example: "D" work is passing by a slim margin. F = Quality and quantity of work in and out of class is unacceptable. Example: "F" work does not pass the course or meet minimum assignment expectations. Late Assignments All work must be submitted the week in which it is due. Work should posted by the beginning of class. Work more than two weeks late is not accepted. A letter grade is assessed for each week late. You have until midnight on the last day of class to submit. It is strongly recommended that students retain a copy of all

assignments at the time that the assignment is posted. Instructor Feedback on Assignments The instructor commits to returning all students’ graded assignments with written feedback to the students by the subsequent class in which the assignments were due. Students are encouraged to meet privately with the instructor if they would like individualized verbal feedback and assistance with assignments. Changes to Assignments ** Please note that there may be changes or alterations to the assignments as they are listed in the course module. As one of the program outcomes for the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program, students must design and develop a database using professional principles and standards. Write a 750- to 1,050-word paper in which you complete the following:

 Choose a database environment from the following:

o An appropriate database environment within your workplace (must be approved by your instructor)

o An Art Museum that needs to track the artwork, artists, and locations where the art is displayed or stored within the museum
