ChemActivity #6
Organic Structures, Nomenclature, and Functional Groups
Model 1: Line Structures
In order to work in organic chemistry, one needs to be able to read the language of organic chemistry, i.e., interpreting structures and using proper nomenclature.
The principle of line structures is that each line represents the covalent bond (i.e., a shared pair of electrons) between two carbon atoms. The bond may be a single, double, or triple bond. Since carbon is a row-2 element, in neutral compounds containing carbon, the carbon atom will always have a total of four bonds. All heteroataoms (i.e., atoms other than carbon or hydrogen) are shown. Given that the line is a carbon-carbon bond, the ends and corners of lines are the carbon atoms. The “missing” bonds are filled in with carbon hydrogen bonds. Hence, a line structure represents the carbon bonding network for the molecule.
Model 2: Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes
Alkanes: CnH2n+2 (saturated hydrocarbons that have all single bonds)

Alkynes: CnH2n-2 (unsaturated hydrocarbons that have a triple bond)
Other hydrocarbons:
Practice Problems:
1. Write the chemical formula and structures for:
i) heptane
ii) propene
iii) cyclobutene
iv) cyclooctyne
v) trans-2-butene
vi) cis-3-heptene
vii) 1-ethylcyclopentene
2. Considering Model 1, propose a general rule for writing the chemical formula for an alkane, cycloalkane, alkene, cycloalkene, alkyne or cycloalkyne.
3. What is an important use of alkenes, such as ethylene (ethene) or vinyl chloride?
4. Write a reaction for the combustion of octane.
5. What type of compound is benzo[a]pyrene? What is its main toxicity and how does this occur?
Model 2: Organic Functional Groups
For each of the following structures, circle and identify all of the organic functional groups and determine the chemical formula (e.g., CaHbNcOd, etc)
