Summary :

In this experiment four materials were tested to find their modulus of elasticity , yield strength , tensile strength ,fracture of stress and the elongation percentage . These materials were steel , brass , aluminium and copper. All results are presented in table 1.0.The strongest material was steel .Aluminium was the weakest metal among the other materials and the values compared were relatively close to the values provided in chapter 6 of the book ”Materials Science and Engineering an Introduction “.

Introduction :

The tensile test is the test most commonly used to indicate the strength and ductility of a material and, often, it is on tensile testing results that the engineer bases his/her design.

In this test a prepared testpiece is held in a suitable device and subjected to a gradually increasing uniaxial load, until failure occurs. During the test, observations of the applied load for appropriate extensions (usually measured via an extensometer) are recorded, frequently in graphical form as a plot of load vs. extension (elongation). The load-deflection characteristics are dependent on the specimen size. Thus, to minimise these geometric factors, load and extension are normalised to engineering stress and engineering strain respectively. It should be noted that the central portion of the testpiece length is reduced in cross sectional area to ensure that yielding and fracture occur in a region where the stresses are not affected by the gripping devices. The transition from the ends to the reduced section is made by an adequate fillet to avoid stress-concentrations caused by an abrupt change of section. This is particularly important for brittle materials which would fracture at a poorly prepared fillet rather than in the central gauge length, as is required in all tensile tests.

Theory :

Stress-strain plot is slightly different between materials and this would lead to a variety of modulus of elasticity , Yield strength and tensile strength values .

Aim :

To calculate Young’s Modulus, Stress, Strain and Elongation for four metals which are: Mild Steel (Grade 250), Aluminium 6061, Copper (C12200) and Brass (C380).

Procedure:

· Record the dimensions and all information of each of the metal test piece.

· Place metal piece into the Universal Testing Machine.

· Use load extension data to create a stress vs. strain graph for the material.

· Calculate young’s modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, fracture stress and percentage of elongation.

Discussion:

Mild steel, Aluminium, Copper and Brass are stretched by the testing machine and as expected fractured in the centre. The machine recorded load extension data which was graphed and transformed into a stress and strain graph using the equations to calculate. Calculations made in order to determine young’s modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, fracture stress and percentage elongation of the material.

Toughness is determined by how much energy a material can absorb before breaking. Resilience is the capacity to absorb energy when deformed elastically. Lower young’s modulus and the greater tensile strength is greater resilience as it can see from the equation.

Aluminium has very little ductility, which can break quickly, this lead to the area under its stress – strain curve to be lower than other materials. Tensile strength is determining the amount of strain in the material before starting to neck itself. Higher tensile strength has high in toughness. Ultimately strength and ductility is required for a tough material.

Issues that could contribute to uncertainties in the experimental measurement and error in the results are approximated to some extent from the testing machine. Error due to results of equations being rounded then reused as powers in later equations. All engineering materials are not exactly the same and each sample of material have slightly different mechanical properties.

Conclusion:

After testing the specimens Mild Steel, Aluminium, Copper and Brass calculations was computed to determine stress, strain, young’s modulus, % of elongation, toughness, resilience, fracture stress, and ultimate tensile strength. All results are presented in Table 1.0. According to the calculation, Mild Steel found to be the strongest material among the other tested specimens with approximately 43 % elongation and the ultimate tensile strength of 376.9 Mpa. Copper was ductile stretching with elongation of 44.14 %, but it was weaker than mild steel and brass. Brass was relatively strong as well; the ultimate tensile strength was 363.07 Mpa and had 56.8 % of elongation. Aluminium was the weakest metal as its ultimate tensile strength was 134.84 Mpa and 16.44 %. The values computed were relatively close to the values provided in chapter 6 of the book “Materials Science and Engineering an Introduction”.
