Introduction

The relief traffic congestion project was brought to our attention by Vahic Goorjian M.S. /P.E., on behalf of the Cal State University, Northridge due to heavy traffic on Jacaranda Walk. The cause of the traffic on Jacaranda Walk is because of The Arbor Grill’s (a store on-campus) popularity and the narrowness of the road. The goal of this project is to relief traffic congestion on this street. Our design is based on preserving as much of the park’s environmental features, such as the trees, meanwhile having the least amount of cost, and ultimately relieving traffic congestion.

Existing Condition

Jacaranda Walk is used by students of Cal State Northridge to access the Arbor grill from both Zelzah and Reseda. The traffic congestion is a huge issue for trucks who are trying to deliver loads to the Oviatt Library (South of Jacaranda Walk). Currently the road is 16’ wide and is rectangular and contains two lanes for traffic. The trucks need to get a quicker access from Jacaranda Walk to the Oviatt. The area under consideration is bounded by Jacaranda walk, the street adjacent to Jacaranda Walk by the Arbor Grill, and Prairie Street. Inscribed of the parameters is a miniature park that contains multiple trees and multiple utilities. There are 3 walkways that go through the park. Each walkway is 8 feet wide and goes through the entire lawn. The park is important to the students and faculty therefore preserving it is a huge part of this project.

Proposed Development

The design has been done in a way to preserve the surrounding environment and prevent moving any utility lines. The proposed road is 16 feet wide and will be cutting through the park avoiding all of the main utilities. However, one of the trees must be removed in order to make this project possible. As mentioned before, the surrounding environment is extremely important to our company and preserving it is one of the biggest bases of our design; therefore instead of completely removing the tree we will relocate somewhere in the park. The road has two horizontal curves, and each curve has a radius of 40 feet. The difference of elevation from the top of the road to the bottom is about 7 feet. The design for the vertical curve has been designed in a way where there will be minimal cutting and filling activity. The grade that we have chosen for the vertical tangent line is -6.57 degrees. image2.jpg

The aggregate (class 2) has been chosen for this design because it is ideal for the project we are using it for. The design used for the concrete on top of the aggregate is called a crown design. The crown design is ideal for flood control and washing off debris to the side of the road. The maximum capacity of the concrete used is 3,000 psi. This concrete type is necessary for the semi-trucks to access the Oviatt Library’s loading dock.

Cost Estimate

The following is the estimated cost for the proposed road above. This amount does not reflect the actual amount because it is only and estimation. A complete breakdown of the cost is available on the following page.

Total area under consideration:

(160ft.)* (16ft.) = 2560 S.F.

 

Excavation and preparation:

(2560S.F.)* ($7.10) =$18176.00

 

6" slab with rebar:

(2560 S.F.) *($10) =$25600.00

O & P (Profit and overhead) 20% * $43776.00 = $52531.20 (Rounded down to $52,500.00)

Conclusion

The existing conditions of the road are unbearable for the students and staff of the university. The traffic congestion has brought up so many issues, such as noise pollution, frustration, and delayed deliveries for the library. The Design that has been proposed relieves heavy congestion off Jacaranda Walkway and allows trucks a quicker access to the Oviatt Library. Another concern for this project was preserving the surrounding environment. Our group has designed a road that will avoid trees, however unfortunately we had to relocate a tree. Another issue was keeping the cost of the project reasonable. Therefore our design has also avoided all main utility lines because removing or altering any of them will be very pricey. In conclusion, our design for this project relief’s traffic congestion preserves the surrounding environment and cost effective.
