Quizzes and Homeworks:
A roll will be taken during each class except classes with Mid-Term Exams. There might be 5-min pop-up quizzes
during the semester (quizzes may be given at the beginning of the class, so DON’T be late). Please bring a standard
flash-card with your name written or typed on it. Answers written on anything else will not be scored (no exceptions).
Each quiz consists of 1-2 multiple-choice problems about the topics we have discussed in 1-3 previous classes and is
worth 10 points. Also, if you miss a quiz (or any other written work) you are considered absent from the class on
that day. A student cannot make up missed quizzes. Missed quizzes will be assigned ZERO points.
You will be assigned four homeworks. Each HW will consist of 9-16 problems. These HWs will be collected and
two problems will be graded (you will not know in advance which ones). We may discuss the solutions to all problems in
the class, please be prepared to engage in discussion. Collaboration is allowed but all written work must be your own.
The given problems should be considered as the minimum assignment - if you have difficulty with a particular section
you are encouraged to work additional problems from that section. Each HW is worth 20 points – 10 points per problem
(the total for HWs is 80 points). HWs are due at the beginning of the class.
Project:
The project is worth 200 points. The project is an individual effort and should be at least 5 pages but not more than
10 pages long and must be typed (Times New Roman, 12pt, double interval). Everyone will be given 10-15 min
(depending on class size) to present her/his project during last class(es). Presentation accounts for half of the points (e.g.
50). The purpose of the project is to obtain knowledge on starting a business. The topics are (choose one):
[1] You decided to open a private school to teach secondary-level students. Discuss all steps (legal and financial) you
need to do in order to start, such as (but not limited): requirements, register the school, applicable laws, restrictions,
capital, necessary contacts, etc.
[2] You decided to start an international travel business. Discuss all steps (legal and financial) you need to do in order to
start, such as (but not limited): requirements, register the travel bureau, applicable laws, restrictions, capital, necessary
contacts, etc.
[3] You decided to start a business for facilitating and supplying interpreting services in NC. Discuss all steps (legal and
financial) you need to do in order to start, such as (but not limited): requirements, register the service, competition,
applicable laws, restrictions, capital, necessary contacts, etc.
[4] You decided to start a company for facilitating contacts and exchange of products between TV broadcasting
companies (domestic and international). Discuss all steps (legal and financial) you need to do in order to start, such as
(but not limited): requirements, register the company, applicable laws, restrictions, capital, necessary contacts, etc.
You must submit a hard copy(ies) of the articles you have used by the due date. The written part
must include the following information about the articles/books you have used: title of the
journal/book, title of the article, name(s) of the author(s), publication details, and corresponding
instructions, laws, bylaws, state or federal requirements, etc.
For the written part I will base the grade on the following: is it important? is it new (relative to what we discussed in
class)? is it interesting? your analysis, calculations and discussion of important features and relevance as well as
connection to real world issues (e.g. you need to research, calculate and analyze real-world data). See last pages for
more details.
For the presentation I will base the grade in addition to the above on the following: how well have you presented?
how are you dressed? how well have you answered questions? how well have you asked questions? You should be
