Assignment 3: Description and Analysis using Elements of Art and Principles of Design
By Friday, April 11, 2014, choose an image from the textbook in any time period (as long as it is not an example that is analyzed in the classroom). In your introduction be sure to correctly identify the work of art with the following information:
· Artist (if known)
· Title
· Date the work of art was created
· Style of the artwork
· Media (materials used, e.g., bronze, oil on canvas)
· Original location and culture and current location (e.g., museum)
Then, in your own words, write a detailed description and analysis of the work of art. Thoroughly explain and underline all of the following terms in your essay (please refrain from using bullet points). Connect each term with a specific visual component in the work of art. For example if you focus on the use of color, identify some of the specific colors used in the piece and where these colors can be found (i.e. The artist used color to provide a sense of balance to the piece, as we can see by her use of red in the gowns of the women on the right and left).
At minimum, your entire submission should be 600 words and incorporate a thorough discussion of all the following terms. Although multiple terms may be used in one sentence, you must focus on the terms separately
Elements of Art:
· Line
· Color
· Value
· Texture
· Shape
· Form
· Space
Principles of Design:
· Balance
· Emphasis
· Contrast
· Movement
· Rhythm
· Pattern
· Unity
Finally, include a summary in your conclusion on how the terms of art help determine the style of art as well as consider how the context of the work of art influences the style (i.e. The use of heavenly appearance of golden colored mosaics, and the stylistic appearance of the figures demonstrates that this work of art was made in the Byzantine era).
