Real World Exercises Ch. 7

1. Use Private IP Addresses and Share a Connection. You are hired as the network administrator of a small startup company with a limited budget. You are instructed to configure the LAN so that the company makes use of a single dynamic IP address it has obtained from its ISP as part of its low-cost Internet access account, but that gives three other computers Internet access as well. How would you do this? Using a Web browser, identify a number of options and compare the features of each.

2. Repair Default Configuration. You are called in by a small business that is experiencing performance problems with one of its network computers. The five workstations in the company share a connection to the Internet using the WinGate proxy server. The complaint is that the computer that hosts WinGate is running slowly and that the Internet connection is slower than normal. What would you look for as the cause of the problem, and how would you remedy it? Use a Web search tool to identify as least one solution to this problem.

3. Troubleshooting Slow Proxy Performance. After installing a proxy server gateway, you notice a significant performance drop on your network. You have installed a single proxy server on the perimeter of your network that handles all services. Use a Web search tool to identify at least two strategies for improving performance.

4. Do a Batch Configuration. You install a proxy server system in a midsize organization with about 100 separate hosts distributed among several subnets. You are faced with the task of configuring all client software on all 100 hosts to access the proxy so that employees can send and receive e-mail and other Internet services. Yet, you have to get everyone online within a day or two. How would you perform the batch configuration quickly? Use a Web browser to identify at least two different solutions that address this task, and then compare the features of each.
