Course Number and Title

BSC 1010: PRICIPLES OF BIOLOGY

Catalog Description

An introduction of the principles of biology designed primarily to acquaint the student with

concepts of cellular biology and biochemistry, genetic theory, evolutionary principles, and

ecological problems. Emphasis will be placed on those biological principles which man needs to

better understand his role and responsibility to the environment.

Course Core Objectives Upon completion of this course a student should be able to: 1. Determine living from non-living by applying criteria characteristics of living organisms. 2. Identify atoms and sub-atomic particles as well as molecules. 3. Calculate atomic weight from atomic numbers and neutron, as well as, molecular weight

from molecular formulas and atomic weights. 4. Describe and discuss ionic, covalent and hydrogen bonding.

5. Identify the organic chemicals in living organisms and relate the function and utilization of each to the human body.

6. Describe the 5 Kingdom system and the organisms in each. 7. Name the parts of the cell and explain how each functions and is related to the other cell

parts. 8. Explain the structure of the cell membrane and how its structure determines what enters

and leaves the cell. 9. Explain passive and active transport systems in the cell membrane. 10. Discuss the Laws of Thermodynamics. 11. Describe enzymes and how they function in the cell. 12. Describe the structure of ATP and its manufacture through both substrate level and

oxidative phosphorylation. 13. Diagram the "light" and "dark" reactions of photosynthesis. 14. Explain the impact of environmental variables on the rate of photosynthesis. 15. Diagram and explain aerobic and anaerobic respiration, including quantities and ATP

generated. 16. Differentiate between mitosis and meiosis and explain the details of each process. 17. Solve genetics problems regarding Mendelian Genetics, including monohybrid and

dihybrid crosses, test crosses, complete and incomplete dominance, multiple alleles, blood types, sex linkage and sex determination.

18. Discuss human genetic disorders and their causes. 19. Describe the structure of DNA and replication of DNA. 20. Describe the structure of RNA and its function in protein synthesis. 21. Discuss the Theory of Natural Selection and relate it to the Organic Theories of

Evolution. 22. Discuss the structure of ecosystems.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty includes the following actions, as well as other similar conduct aimed at

making false representation with respect to the student’s academic performance.

(1) Cheating on an exam.

(2) Collaborating with others on work to be presented, if contrary to the stated rules of the

course.

(3) Submitting, if contrary to the rules of the course, work previously submitted in another

course.

(4) Knowingly and intentionally assisting another student in any of the above actions, including

assistance in an arrangement whereby work, classroom performance, examination, or other

activity is submitted or performed by a person other that the student under whose name the work

is submitted or performed by a person other that the student under whose name the work is

submitted or performed.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend all courses and course activities for which they are registered.

Any class meeting missed, regardless of cause, reduces the opportunity of learning and may

adversely affect a student’s achievement in the course. Class attendance policies are set by

individual professors and/or departments. An accurate record of attendance will be kept for each

class. Students are expected to adhere to the policies set by each Professor.

Students, when officially representing the College, such as on a field trip, shall not be counted

absent, provided their professors are given prior notification and any missed assignments are

subsequently completed to each professor’s satisfaction.

Students will be granted excused absences in the case of a substantiated emergency such as a

confining illness, a serious accident or the death of an immediate relative. Professors decide on

the validity of the excuses and provide opportunities for students to complete any required make-

up work. Students are responsible for immediately informing their professors when they must

miss class sessions for emergency meetings.

Classroom Etiquette and Student Behavior Guidelines

Students will demonstrate respect for professors and fellow students. Behavior that is disruptive

to a positive learning environment reported by the professor will result in a warning on the first

instance; the second instance might result in expulsion from the course or campus.

Course Conduct:

1. During class all cell phones, pagers, and beepers must be turned off.

2. Minimal standards of adult behavior are expected in class including one person at a time

lecturing, asking questions, etc. Competitive, repetitive disturbance of lectures by

conversation concurrent with discussion of topics will immediately result in removal from

the class.

3. Tardiness occasionally occurs—this is not a problem unless it becomes repetitive.

Patterns of such disruption will result in removal from the class.

4. Missed in-class exams may be made up but a different set of questions will be given.

5. If you become ill, stay home. DO NOT come to class sick and spread your contagion. Use

common sense, especially good public health logic concerning flu viruses, etc. if you have

the flu or a cold, STAY HOME, contact me via e-mail or phone, get well, and then come to

class.

Exams: These will contain a mixture of multiple choice questions, essays, data analysis and

calculations. A minimum of 20 study hours of study per exam is required. This is AFTER

you have completed all of the readings!

Grades: grades will be determined by scores on four exams. Each exam = 100 pts.

Grade Scale: 100-90 A, 89-80 B, 79-80 C, 69-60 D, 59 or < F.
