PHOTOS – Include the digital photos with your lab report, either as separate

attachments to an e-mail or paste into your document.

Photo #1 – Take a photo of the syringe with spinach disks inside, after vacuuming;

be sure to show the disks submerged to the bottom – you may need an

assistant to take the photo since you have to keep your finger over the syringe end.

Photo #2 – Take a photo of the set up of both cups under the light; showing all disks at the bottom.

Photo #3 – Take a photo showing the results of any cups that have disks floating –

take a photo so that the disks that are floating are shown and the label on the cup shows.

C. What was the function of adding the sodium bicarbonate to the solution?

D. When you placed the floating disks in the dark, was there a difference between the distilled water solution and the bicarbonate solution? Explain your answer.

E. Cellular respiration produces carbon dioxide. Leaves perform cellular respiration whether they are in the light or dark. Why did the leaf disks in the dark not float? And why do the floating leaf disks sink when placed in the dark?
