In a bid to live up to its excellent reputation, Capital One ensures to demonstrate a high sense of responsibility in its dealings and interactions with the community. Capital One appreciates that by contributing in various community development initiatives, both the company and the community stand to gain significantly. Thus, the company always promotes the building of strong and healthy communities because this leads to the well being the society. To achieve this, the company applies the principles of cooperation, innovation and empowerment because these have worked well for the company in other areas such as in its dealings and interactions with its various stakeholders (Capital One, 2013). This involvement also helps the company to promote and maintain its reputation, thus helping to attract more partners and customers to the organization. Some of the initiatives that Capital One engages in to promote corporate citizenship include financial education, support to children and families, environmental sustainability, donations and partnerships as well as economic development loans and investments.

Capital One has been involved in many corporate citizenship initiatives. The company has achieved notable performance in environmental sustainability. For instance, more than one-third of the company’s office collection has green building certification. The company minimizes direct impacts by continually applying green restorations of properties and identifying green construction whenever the company plans to develop new buildings. Besides, in 2009, the company and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) endorsed a five-year plan relating to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, with a goal of reducing the emissions by 10 percent (McCarthy, 2013). The company has made significant efforts in ensuring that it achieves that goal. In addition, the company has achieved notable success in promoting green business and operational practices. For example, Capital One always encourages its customers purchase green products as well as use online transactions to reduce use of paper in facilitating transactions. Although the company has made notable contributions in financial education, it could still make significant improvements in this area because the level of financial literacy is still relatively low (Wright-Contreras, n.d).

My experience with Capital One has been quite fulfilling so far. The customer support has been helpful and fast in responding to the numerous queries that customers present. Besides, the support staff has the required competence and experience to resolve conflicts and issues that arise in the course of business. The company’s support to the community has been commendable and successful because its various community initiatives have managed to transform the lives of many in the communities involved. In particular, the support to children and families has contributed a lot in enhancing their lives (Wright-Contreras, n.d). Through this support, children and families can have access to essential resources that help to improve their lives socially and economically.

I will continue being a client in Capital One bank because its services are excellent. Through its financial education programs, I am able to gain substantial information that is not only sufficient but also relevant to me in understanding and resolving any queries related to finances. The program enables me to improve my money management and financial literacy skills, which are essential in enabling me to achieve success (Moran, n.d). Thus, through my interaction with the bank, I become financially independent. Most importantly, I get an excellent opportunity to gain critical investment skills and knowledge, which enable me to achieve financial security. Moreover, I take pride in being associated with a company that promotes community development and environmental conservation.

Mod. 8

Business sustainability refers to an organization’s efforts to create resiliency to survive shocks by establishing healthy social, economic and environmental systems. Sustainability is essential because it enables businesses to create economic value as well as to promote strong communities and healthy ecosystems. Being one of the fortune 500 companies, Capital One is on the forefront in promoting sustainability to enhance its chances of survival, as well as to contribute in the promotion of healthy ecosystems. To achieve this goal, the company engages in various initiatives related to management of waste management, greenhouse gas emissions, green-product development, energy efficiency and water conservation. For instance, the company, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) passed a five-year plan to ensure the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (McCarthy, 2013). Every day, Capital One strives to ensure that all its business operations in all parts of the world are socially responsible and environmentally sound because the company appreciates the world is a global village. The company seeks to raise awareness of practices that promote sustainability among its consumers, associates, shareholders and suppliers. Moreover, Capital One ensures to manage issues with social significance such as labor standards and working conditions for its employees.

To achieve the various standards put forth in the readings and articles, Capital One has actively takes measures to promote governance issues related to the maintenance of ethical business practices, complying with regulations, and conforming to the accepted industry standards. The standards covered in the article relate to the promotion of corporate social responsibility (CSR), social and environmental performance, as well as issues related to labor law such as the ILO conventions (Midttun, 2008). In this case, Capital One has collaborated with leading community organizations in New York to promote philanthropic services and community development, as well as to create an environment that facilitates positive change. This move is critical because it provides the organization with unique opportunities for creating value in the communities in which it operates. In 2008, the company started a journey on environmental sustainability by raising awareness among its partners and associates, as well as made significant progress to entrench sustainability in all its businesses. Some of the main accomplishments that Capital One has achieved include establishing an Environmental Sustainability Office (ESO) to ensure proper coordination of its activities related to sustainability, setting up an Environment Council that enables the company to adhere to the best practices in relation to environmental protection (Capital One, 2013). In addition, the company has established a team of Green Corps who operate in all markets, coordinating and executing local community activities. Other initiatives include reducing green house emissions, recycling waste, energy conservation, workforce training and offering flexible work solution. The move by Capital One to manage adhere to acceptable labor standards and provide its associates with appropriate working conditions helps to ensure that the company meets ILO standards.

Certainly, my experience with Capital One has been a fulfilling one, especially because I have witnessed numerous community projects initiated by the company, including the positive impact that such projects have had on those communities. I am well aware of the company’s initiatives to enhance its associates’ compensation and working conditions. For instance, its benefits to its associates are among the best in the industry because the company focuses on helping all associates to achieve the best financially, physically and emotionally. For this reason, the associates receive incomparable medical, vision, dental and prescription drug plans. In addition, the company makes numerous initiatives to support small businesses, serving its customers responsibly and protecting the environment (Capital One, 2013). The various community projects has played an instrumental role in empowering communities and ensuring that such communities are able to deal with some of their most troubling challenges such as providing opportunities for affordable housing and education, as well as how to take better care of their environments.

So far, Capital One has managed to expand its operations to other countries including Canada and the United Kingdom, where it is applying the same standards in relation to sustainability. For instance, Capital One Canada performs well and is among the companies in the country that offer its customers a wide range of financial services, which are often tailored to meet the individual customer’s requirements (Agonist Learning Center, 2009). Capita One has been received well by customers in that country because it offers exceptional services. By offering personalized plans to customers, the company hopes to attract new customers, as well as retain its existing ones. Capita One operations in the United Kingdom have also been successful, where the company also strives to ensure uniform application of its policies and standards. Besides, the company has been received well by customers in this market, thus increasing its overall profitability (Fang, 2012).
