Turn on the Slide Show feature of Power Point to take the quiz, then it will give you a chance to answer the questions before the answers appear.

I would encourage you to write down your answers before they are given to you.

There are no points for this quiz (of course)!

What Is Hunger?

A profound, debilitating, painful

human experience that keeps us

from working productively, from

thinking clearly, from resisting

disease and sickness, and can

ultimately kill us.

Where are the people experiencing undernutrition?

World HUNGER Map:

Equatorial Population Centers

50% of the World’s hunger would be gone

if hunger was ended in the following 5 countries:

India

Bangladesh

Indonesia

Pakistan

Nigeria

Nearly 33% of the

world’s hungry live

in India

What Does Hunger Feel Like?

TRY IT!

Go without food for one day (24 hours)!

In fact, this is an assignment! Go without any food for 24 hours. You may drink water, but nothing else.

I want you to write a ½-page paper about your experience and turn it in sometime before Spring Break (Week 9). There is a Drop Box in Week 9 for you to submit the assignment.

Exemptions:

1) If you are pregnant (DO NOT FAST)

(Guys, I will not accept this as an excuse from you )

2) If there is a medical reason you should not fast, then do not do it

If you are exempt, then tell me. Instead, prepare simple meals and do not eat more than is needed for 24 hours.

True or False? People Are Hungry Because There Are Too Many People On Our Planet! There are simply too many mouths to feed?

The World Food Problem

Are people hungry

because the world

doesn’t produce enough food?

Those with plenty accumulate more, while those who have little keep getting less. Why?

If the world’s total food supply were divided evenly among the world’s people, each person would have more than the minimum amount needed for survival.

In the United States, 40% to 50%

of all food ready for harvest

NEVER GETS EATEN!

Are People Hungry Because There Are Too Many People On Our Planet? Is the real issue OVERPOPULATION?

1804 – First Time Population Hit One Billion Alive

1927 – Two Billion Alive

1960 – Three Billion Alive

1975 – Four Billion Alive

1999 – Six Billion Alive

About 2012 – Seven Billion Alive

Peak Growth Rate

was 2.19% in 1963

Currently it is 1.15%

In 2020 it will be 1.00%

In 2050 it will be 0.50%

United Nations Predicts Stabilized Population

About The Year 2200

At Just Over 10 Billion Living People

Feed That Many People

Or, go Here to View Current World Population Clock

Which is correct?

Remember these are estimates

How Many People Have Ever Lived?

Assuming Start At 50,000 BC, Then About 106 Billion Have Lived, So 6% Of All People Who Have Ever Lived Are Alive Today!

Many Issues Suggest That Having 10 Billion Living People Is A BAD Problem, But Lack Of Food Is Not One Of Those Issues

What Is “Carrying Capacity”?

Carrying capacity refers to the number

of individuals who can be supported

in a given area within natural resource

limits, and without degrading the natural,

social, cultural and economic

environment for present

and future generations.

What do you think the carrying capacity of the earth is?

What Is “Carrying Capacity”?

Often a site by site issue.

Have you put too many mice in the same cage?

Ecologists define 'carrying capacity‘

as the population of a given species

that can be supported indefinitely in a

defined habitat without permanently

damaging the ecosystem upon

which it is dependent.

John B. Calhoun

What is the “Habitat of People”?

Were These

Based On

The Studies

By Calhoun?

Even as the population has

been increasing faster than

ever, the amount of food

produced per person has

increased even faster.

There is more food

available per person today

than there was 25 years ago

Hunger is not a “food supply” problem

We have enough food!

Hunger is not an overpopulation problem

We can produce enough food for many

more people.

(HUG A FARMER!)

Yet 12.5% of all Americans under the age

of 13 will go to bed hungry tonight.

Globally, 6 million children will die this year from malnutrition (one every 5 seconds).

WHY? WHAT IS THE CAUSE?

Hunger is

a POVERTY problem

The poor go hungry

because they cannot

afford to buy food,

or they cannot

produce enough

food for themselves.

13% to 17% of the World’s

population (800 million people)

suffer from chronic hunger

“Food Distributes To Money”

Map of World Poverty

Hunger Map

Poverty Map

Is there a correlation?

In some cases food may actually be present

but it is so expensive

that only the wealthy can afford it.

What Is Hunger?

Under-nutrition

A Form Of Malnutrition

- Linked to Poverty, among

many other contributing

factors

Some people argue that the #1 problem of the poor in the USA is what?

Obesity

How can that be?

In 2006, Professor Popkin, University of North Carolina,

told the International Association of Agricultural

Economists the number of overweight people had

topped one billion (of which 300 million are obese),

compared with 800 million undernourished. He added

this transition from a starving world to an obese one

was accelerating.

So, what has changed since 2006?

MALNUTRITION can be

UNDERnutrition

or

OVERnutrition

Over-nutrition (Too Much Food Eaten)

- High-Income Countries, or high-income

people in low-income countries

- - obesity, diabetes, hypertension,

atherosclerosis

Under-nutrition (Not Enough Food Eaten)

- Low-Income Countries, or low-income

people in high-income countries

Also Secondary Malnutrition

- Caused by Disease

Types of Undernutrition?

Acute Under-nutrition

- Happens Fast, Like Famines

- - often caused by natural disasters

- - often caused by people

Chronic Under-nutrition

- Secondary Malnutrition

- Micronutrient Malnutrition

- Protein-Calorie Malnutrition

- Usually Caused By or Linked To Poverty

More Details From Chapter 3

Chronic Under-nutrition

May be due to inadequate calories,

protein, or nutrients such as iron,

vitamin A, or iodine.

Our major concern is about inadequate

quantity of food or calories.

Chronic Under-nutrition

1/6th of the world’s population

suffers from chronic hunger

(800 million people)

(1 BILLION people)

12-18 million people die

EVERY YEAR from causes

related to inadequate

food

(35,000 per day)

Most at risk are

infants and preschool children,

and pregnant and nursing women

2007 Top-10 Billionaires

ARE THESE PEOPLE THE PROBLEM?

Set up

nutrition intervention programs

targeting newborns, infants,

and pregnant and nursing

mothers

Initial Strategy – Treat Symptoms

This Strategy is:

“Feed The Hungry Today”

Long Term Strategy – Treat Causes

Increase the purchasing power

of the poor by raising their incomes

and/or lowering the price of food

Increase the quantity of food

offered for sale

This Strategy is:

“End hunger tomorrow”

Strategy Requirements:

Increase agricultural productivity

Increase employment opportunities

Increase access to land

Reduce birthrates

Make policy changes
