Interview Report

For this interview, I chose to speak with Julie Benson on her viewpoints of technology

and its future advancements. Benson is someone who is intrigued with new technology, but one

of the late bloomers when it comes to using new devices. I was curious to see what her opinion

was on the topic. Upon beginning our discussion, Benson revealed that one of her first jobs was

in the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Looking back, she is still amazed of the vast

difference in technology from when she first began working until now. When asked about where

she sees the difference in the way it has advanced, she said, “Technology has changed

dramatically. We went strictly from punching key technology, to full blown social media,

texting, and e-mailing. I love it; I really do.”

Benson can also see the downsides that technology has to offer. When questioned about

what problems she has faced regarding new devices, she admitted, “The older generation is left

out because they aren’t up-to-date. Additionally, I have a problem with the fact that social media

has taken over and the social interaction between individuals is lacking. It’s a people issue.” Julie

went on to tell me about her current iPad. She would like to have the newest version, but the

price of new technology prohibits a few people from keeping up with the newest devices.

Another problem she faces is the time the newer generation spends on devices such as the

iPhone. “I don’t have as much time to spend devoted to figuring out how to work new

technology. I would sit there for hours and figure it out if I could” (Benson).

As far as her opinion on whether or not advancements in technology have become

beneficial or a burden, Benson lies somewhere in between the two. “It depends on the purpose of

the machine or equipment. Right now, I think the personal contact is important still. I don’t want

to be transferred to automated calls all the time; I would rather speak to a real person. However,

advancements in the medical fields help” (Benson).

Technology has drastically changed from where we were even five years ago. With new

advancements comes the opportunity for change, but not all of the changes are for the better. I

believe the division between generation and the ability to use technology will continue to grow.
