· Introduction

·  Rationale

·  Review of Literature

The Introduction explains the issue students are examining and why it is significant.

· Describes the general area to be studied.

· Explains why this area is important to the general area under study.

· States students’ research problem.

· Explains the background to the research problem.

· States students’ research questions.

· Further justifies the proposed study.

· Lists the issues that emerge from the research problem.

The Rationale Explains how these research questions are related to the larger issues raised in the introduction.

· Describes what specific claim, hypothesis, and/or model of psycholinguistics students will evaluate with these questions.

· Explains what it will show about the psychology of language if students’ hypothesis is confirmed.

· Explains what it will suggest about the psychology of language if students’ hypothesis is disconfirmed.

The Background/Review of the Literature is a description of what is already known about this area and gives a short discussion of why the background studies are not sufficient.

· Summarizes what is already known about the field. Includes a summary of the basic background information on the topic gleaned from students’ literature review (may include information from the book and class, but the bulk should be outside sources)

· Discusses several critical studies that have already been done in this area (cited according to APA guidelines/standards). Remembers to use current references, studies and material that is 5 plus years old is outdated unless it is the only literature that addresses the topic.

· Points out why these background studies are insufficient. In other words, what question(s) do they leave unresolved that students would like to study?

· Lists these readings in References at the end of the proposal in APA format.

The tone is appropriate to the content and assignment.
