Transient Problem requiring the Excel Method

You are asked to create an Excel Spreadsheet to solve the following problem. The problem is similar to 2.5.39 in your text except I have added numbers to some of the variables. You can look up the formula you will need to enter in your spreadsheet in the Solutions document. However I will give extra credit if you use simpler trigonometry functions. (two are all that’s needed.) I will also give extra credit if you use Matlab to resolve the solution. Here is the problem.

A floor trolley has started to pull a rope to the right along the floor at 1 ft/sec. It started at time = 0 and has accelerated to its maximum speed by 1 second. It has travelled 1 foot to the position shown below. It has now drawn all the slack out of the rope and it is ready to pick up a load. It will continue at constant speed (no acceleration) as shown.

It must lift Load “A” up 3 feet so it can be loaded into a pickup truck.

( C ) ( B ) ( y ( 1 sec) = 0 ft ) ( V = 1 ft/sec A = 0 ) ( A ) ( 0 ) ( X ( 1 sec) = 1 ft ) ( h = 10 ft )Set up a spreadsheet like the ones in Blackboard under Course Documents titled “Excel Method”. How long does the trolley track need to be and how long will it take from t=0 until the load is lifted 3 feet?Pick a time step that fills one page and plot Velocity of “A” versus time and rate that rope from “B to C” lengthens versus timeon a separate page.
