a. Treaty of Versailles

b. Failure of the League of Nations to deal with international problems

c. Appeasement encouraged violent behavior.

d. Hilter was expansionist

e. Japanese Imperialism

The treaty of Versailles is one of the most important causes of the World War II. This is because the treaty did not help to convey peace in the Europe but instead helped in the rise of Adolf Hilter to authority in Germany.

Failure of the League of Nations to deal with international problems was because of the time taken by the democratic nations to respond to the threats caused by the fascist militarism. At that time many countries had started to leave the League, there were few countries left, and they could not help solve the issues hence failure (Dowswell, 2002).

Neville Chamberlain believed in appeasement and at the time of war he thought he could solve the issues of the treaty of Versailles which had affected the Germans to the extreme. The only way he could solve the issue was through giving in to the Hilter’s demands so that no other war could take place.

Hilter’s rise to power aimed at uniting the Germans so that he could control them in anything that he wanted to do. His focus was to get back the German colonies so that he could unite the whole of Germany and control them. He did not focus on the issues that could stop the war (Adams & Crawford, 2007).

Japanese imperialism was due to inadequate raw materials to maintain their rising industrial economy and therefore they depended on China for the materials. This led to collision with the United States that had control of the pacific and therefore United States had to decide on the next move. Rivalry came into play when the Japanese bombed the Pearl Harbor of the United States. This lead the United States to make a decision to stop shipping of oil to Japan so that Japan would stop its violent behavior in China but Japan made a decision to have a war with the United States. This was the cause of the war between the two countries with their alliances joining in to help their allies.

1. List and describe the 4 interlocking factors that led to the outbreak of world war

1. Territorial rivalries

1. Economic competition

1. German unification

1. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Countries in Europe had made joint defense agreements that would help them to conquer the battle. Germany had a mutual defense agreement with Austria- Hungary, which had war against Serbia. Serbia had an alliance with Russia and this lead to involvement of Russian in the war as it helped Serbia. Later France came to war because of the mutual agreement that existed between them and Russia. This caused territorial rivalry since every alliance would help those that they had mutual agreement. This was the main cause of the war (McMeekin, 2011).

Economic competition was because of desire for countries to increase their wealth and become more powerful than others. This was through additional territories in their control and countries in Africa and Asia were the points of debate among the European nations. This was the only option for the European nations since the Africa and Asia were rich in raw materials that these nations were looking for.

German unification was a factor of the world war I. Unification of Germany lead to imbalance of power in Europe and this caused replacement of small and defenseless states with large aggressive nations. This unification in Germany made the country to become powerful politically, economically and a military monster that was a threat to other nations. There was increase in the number of military population all European nations due to aggression by nations to revenge against their rivals. This increase in military pushed countries to involve in the a war hence the World War I.

Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the main cause that triggered other factors to start the World War I. It was due to protest by the Austria- Hungary to control the Serbia region and lead to declaration of a war by the Austria-Hungary on Serbia. Russia had to be involved in the war because of their alliance with Serbia and therefore Germany went to war with Russia due to the alliance of Germany and Serbia. This caused an expansion of the war due to involvement of all countries that had defense alliances.
