Objectives:

· To predict, sketch and test acceleration vs. time kinematics graphs

· To review predicting and sketching distance vs. time and velocity vs. time kinematics graphs

PROCEDURE:

1. Begin by making charts like the one below for each of the following a-d

a. The man walks slowly to the house from the origin.

Position –Time Graph

Explanation for graph’s appearance –after actually performing the activity.

Velocity-Time Graph

Acceleration –Time Graph

b. The man is sleeping under the tree. When he wakes up he runs toward the house constantly speeding up as he goes.

c. The man steps outside the house pausing to lock the door. He then walks quickly for 3 meters then immediately slows down and walks the rest of the way at this slow pace to the tree.

d. The man walks steadily toward the tree, stops to pick up a leaf, turns and walks steadily toward the house slowing to a stop before he arrives.

2. Use MOVING MAN to verify or correct your predicted graph with a different colored pen.

3. Explain the reasoning for each graph.

4. Write an acceleration scenario, sketch the d-t, v-t, and a-t graphs for the story in red pen, then verify or correct your prediction in a different color pen.

Scenario A:

Position Time Graph

The man that walks slowly gains displacement as time went on.

Velocity Time Graph

The graph is a straight line since the man moves at a constant velocity.

Acceleration Time Graph

With velocity constant, there is no change in velocity so acceleration is zero.

Scenario B:

Position Time Graph

This is the same as above but graph starts at y=(0,-8) in the y-axis since the man began in the tree

Velocity Time Graph

The graph is still as straight line since there is no change in speed.

Acceleration Time Graph

With velocity constant, there is no change in velocity so acceleration is zero.

Scenario C:

Position Time Graph

Since the man move quixkly, his displaced changes rapidly as shown by the steep in the graph and backs a little when he slow down and the since the man travel after at constant speed the line is again straight.

Velocity Time Graph

Velocity went downward since he walked in the opposite direction and the value diminished a little since he slowed down.

Acceleration Time Graph

First the man gains acceleration as he walks quickly and then acceleration becomes zero thereafter when he walk slowly and steadily.

Scenario D:

Position Time Graph

The man gains displacement as he gains velocity but the direction is opposite since he went to the opposite direction. The time he goes back displacement then increase towards the right.

Velocity Time Graph

The man changed position but the velocity is constant. This is why the graph is a straight line.

Acceleration Time Graph

The walks steadily the whole time so acceleration is zero.
