CE 1120: INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING

Final Project: Bridge Design, Construction, and Evaluation

What: Oral presentation and written paper on the bridge project are required (see below for

detail). When: Project starting: October 22, 2013; Oral presentation: December 3 – December 12, 2013.

Paper due date: The final paper (a hard copy) must be submitted by 1 PM, December 17, 2013.

How: 1) For design, construction and evaluation, follow the instructions given by Dr. Ebrahimpour

and Dr. Savage. 2) For oral presentation, follow the instruction given below. 3) For preparation of the final paper, follow the instructions given by Dr. Sato (Technical

Writing lectures and notes). Where: REND 203 for oral presentation; Your home for bridge construction; Lillibridge

Engineering Laboratory (LEL) hallway for bridge testing and competition. Oral Presentation Requirement

1) An oral presentation is required on the bridge project. This must be a team presentation, and individuals (everyone) must participate as a presenter.

2) Your presentation must be a formal presentation using power point. You should dress well like a professional engineer; formal dress of your country will be welcomed).

3) The duration of the presentation is 10 min per team; no less than 1 min per person. 4) The power point (a hard copy; 4 slides per page) must be submitted by 1 PM, Tuesday

(December 3, 2013). The general order of the slides is:

1) Title slide that contains the course number and name, title/topic, authors/presenters’ name and affiliation, address (departmental address, not home address).  Do not include the name of the member(s) who did not involve in your bridge design,

construction, and testing.  Those students who did not involve in your bridge design, construction, and testing

should not be a presenter(s).

2) “Introduction” slide(s) include background and objectives. 3) “Materials and Methods” slide(s) include materials/equipment used, and show how your

bridge was designed, constructed, and tested. 4) “Results and Discussion” slide(s) show the result of the bridge testing, and discussion on

the bridge you designed and constructed.  Test results are available through Moodle.

5) “Conclusions and Recommendation” slide(s) give major conclusions and outcome. Recommendation is, for example, what you would do if you were given another chance and/or suggestions to the instructors/organizers of the Bridge competition.

6) Acknowledgement – acknowledge if you received help/advice from persons other than your team members.

Written Paper (Final paper) Requirements - follow Sato’s lecture on Technical Writing

 The paper must be prepared and submitted by individual students.  The final paper is expected to be between 3 and 5 type written pages (single spaced).  The paper must be typed using a font size of 11 or 12, font type of Times New Roman.  Have the papers typed, single-spaced, on one side only paper with 25-mm (1 inch) margins  Margins, in all directions, must be 25 mm (1 inch).  A cover page must include course number, course title, paper title, student name, affiliation,

corresponding address, E-mail address, and abstract (follow Sato’s lecture on Technical Writing).

 Abstract should be between100 and 200 words, including objective of the project, methodology, and major results and conclusions.

 The primary use of SI units is mandatory. Units other than SI may be given in parenthesis.  The paper must be succinct, well organized, grammatically, and technically correct. *  Artwork (e.g., figures, tables, photos, and associated documents) may be included in text or

Appendix (Appendices). Appendices are not included in the page requirement.  The final paper must be bound (stapled).
