Devlin, Hannah. "Video games may affect young brains for better and worse." Times [London, England] 16 Nov. 2011: 22. Academic OneFile. Web. 11 Oct. 2013.

Summary: Hannah Devlin had a scientific study on playing Video Games, which could alter the brain structure of teenagers. She noticed that adolescents who played more than 12 hours a week had brain differences consistent with drug addicts and gamblers, The study was published in the Translational Psychiatry Journal analyzed the brain structures of 154 gamers aged 14 had grey matter in the ventral striatum part of the brain's reward system linked to gambling substance abuse hyper - sexual behavior. However the scientists said that the differences couldn't be assumed to be wholly negative as they were accompanied by elements consistent with superior decision making and self control. Evaluation: Devlin’s article was published in the The Times, an England famous newspaper. She is a Science Correspondent, and she has a lot beneficial article in the newspaper. In her brief article, she sites two types of sources, which are studies by scientists; The studies proved that the more you play video games the more of your behavior changes, like your sexual behavior and binge eating. Indeed, the brief article assisted me to get more information about my topic. Comment by Beth Powell: She only cites one study.

Carey, Benedict. “Shooting in the Dark.” The New York Times. The New York Times Company, 11 Feb. 2013. Web. 11 Oct. 2013.

Summary: The young students who fired students at the movie theatre in Columbine high school were Video Gamers who seemed to be acting some dark digital fantasy or the idea of the massacres had come from computer or video games. As the Gamers are more realistic and bloodier than ever and also most American boys play but girls play at lower rates. A new research clarified that playing video games can stir hostile and urges aggressive behavior. Over long periods such as habits increases the likelihood that a person will commit a violent crime, the search falls into three categories; Short Term laboratory Experiments, Longer Term studies and Correlation Studies. Lab experiments confirmed games stir the blood and many studies found that a dose of violent gaming makes people act a little more rudely than they would otherwise. Some studies in schools found that over time digital warriors get into increasing fights in the school yard. There are many factors act like a school shooting including feeling socially isolated, being bullied and so on; the Violent Media is another factor. In conclusion, most researchers found aggressive children who were most like to be drawn to violent video games. Comment by Beth Powell: There was not a movie theater in Columbine high school. There were two shooting incidents: Movie theater in Colorado. Columbine High School. Comment by Beth Powell: Word for word from the original. Comment by Beth Powell: Word for word from the original. Comment by Beth Powell: Word for word Comment by Beth Powell: Word for word Comment by Beth Powell: Too close to the original; plus, this doesn’t make sense. Comment by Beth Powell: Word for word Comment by Beth Powell: What research? And, this is too close to the original.

Evaluation: Carey’s article was published in the New York Times, a nationally distributed newspaper. In his article, he put many sources to convey that violent video games have negative side affect; Michod R. Ward, an economist at the university of Texas, explained and made a research about the side affect of vide games and divided the side affects into 3 categories. Additionally, lab experiments confirm some types of video game that had side effects on the people. Also, there are a lot of research and the doctors, which he mentioned his their studies, could give me more details about my topic. In fact, all of research, doctors and psychologists, beneficial details that help me to know more about my topic.

Again, the information is too much in the original’s words, with no quotation marks. This is considered plagiarism. You need to show me that you comprehended the article by writing about it in your own words.

Gentile, Douglas. “The Multiple Dimensions of Video Game Effects.” Child Development Perspectives. 1st ed. Vol. 5. N.p.: Society for Research in Child Development, 2011. 75-81. 10 May 2011. Web. 11 Oct. 2013.

Summary: In the past 30 years, digital electronic games (hereafter called video games) have gone from novelty entertainment to one of the largest industries in terms of both money. The existing research suggests that there are at least five dimensions on which video games can affect players: the amount of play, the content of play, the game context, the structure of the game, and the mechanics of game play. Many studies have found associations between the amount of game play and several negative outcomes, such as increased aggression. It is likely, however, that some of these associations are not due to amount per se, but are artifacts of the relation between amount and the other dimensions. If gamers spend no time playing, no effects can happen. There is no standard definition of content, although most definitions would likely the “script” included requiring the player to solve math puzzles would likely provide educational math content, whereas a game in which the script for the characters included shooting at each other would provide violent content. The least researched dimension of game effects is how the game context alters or creates effects. Context is also the least well defined, but we can describe several aspects. First, changing the rules or goals of a game is a type of in-game context that could moderate the effects. Video games require the player to work with some type of controller. This could be a mouse and keyboard, a game control pad, a balance board, a joystick, and so on. At the simplest level, practice with any of these devices should improve skills with it. These could increase fine motor skills (such as with a thumb controller), gross motor skills (swinging the Wii remote like a baseball bat). It is important to realize that although game mechanics and structure are theoretically distinct, they are not independent in practice. There is a continuous feedback loop between the two. Evaluation: The effect of video games is based on some structure to get the effect on the brain. It depends on the time spent on the game that leads to lack of school activities in the brain and also leads to poor thinking. It can also be influenced by the content of the game itself by affecting the emotions, feelings and the behavior to be aggressive in the brain. In the other hand, playing online games with other people can gain the individual teamwork expertise in real life situations, and depending on the games either its driving of shooting can improve the performance of the eye to gain attention in real life and also joystick takes a role in improving the eye-hand coordination which can be improved by the individual. This source contains a lot of scientific studies and experimental facts done by professional people.

Park, Alice. “How Playing Violent Video Games May Change the Brain.” Time. Time Inc., 2 Dec. 2011. Web. 11 Oct. 2013.

Summary: Twenty eight students were randomly chosen to play either violent games or non violent ones by Dr. Vincent and his colleagues at Indiana university. Researchers found that those who played Violent Games showed less activity in areas that involved emotions and inhabitations of our impulses. Dr. Vincent noticed that the participants after a week of Not playing Video Games, their brain activity had changed again. One task the participants completed to see their response to Violent & Non violent words through a psychological test known as the Stroop Effect. It is noticed to see a delay in identifying color as we read first before noting the color. Researchers found that who played Non violent games showed the normal delay but after a week they showed less activation of their emotional brain centers. Another task was designed to test students attention and concentration showed declines in the violent game group after a week of play. The brain does changes in response to playing a violent Game even just 2 hours a day for a week.

Evaluation: In the online-article of “ How Playing Violent Video Games May Change the Brain” the research on children was accurate. This source is trustable because it includes facts based on scientific studies and done by doctors in litigable universities, such as Dr. Vincent Mathews and his group in Indiana University; They did their long study on the playing of violence introduced and practiced in video games that are in the reach of kids has a direct change on their brain.

If you choose to revise, please write it in your own words.

Also, please know that if I see this kind of work again, where any text is copied word-for-word from the original, you will receive a zero. I understand that this annotated bibliography assignment is challenging because you must summarize what someone else said, but in the next two papers, you will be expected to understand how to write with sources to support your ideas, and you cannot copy word-for-word from the original sources.
