By now, you have identified and done some literature search on your topic/health behavior and target population. In short, you have assessed the need for a program or intervention to address the health behavior you previously identified. For Module 2 of the session long project (SLP), you will again conduct a literature search utilizing peer-reviewed journal articles, books, professional organization articles, etc. to help you identify evidence-based strategies to best address the health behavior in your target population.

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS

The following items will be assessed in particular:

1. Describe your program’s overall goal and at least two 1 learning objective and 1 behavioral objective for your specific target population. Your objectives must be specific, measureable, achievable, realistic, and time-phased (SMART). Make sure that you have read the required readings and completed the required 30-minute tutorial before developing your goal and objectives.

2. Based on your literature search, provide a summary of evidence-based strategies that have been shown effective in promoting or reducing the behavior in your target population.

3. Identify two (2) evidence-based strategies that you will use to implement your program or intervention. Provide an explanation why you have chosen these strategies and defend your choices.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks (CDC, 2013). In 2010, the United States had well over twenty thousand confirmed cases, making it the most common vector-borne disease in the country. Lyme disease in the United States, as stated before is spread through the blacklegged tick, which is predominately found in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states to include Virginia, Maine, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and even in some parts of northern California. When getting bit, the wounds are most often found in hard to see areas such as the groin, armpits, and scalp and in most cases a period of thirty six to forty eight hours or more with the tick attached before transmission of the bacterium can be transmitted (CDC, 2013). A patient that has been bit by the blacklegged tick typically exhibits erythema migrans or “bulls eye rash”, fatigue, chills, fever, headache, body aches, heart palpitations, and swollen lymph nodes. The most notable of these symptoms would be the erythema migrans; it is an early characteristic of someone who has potentially been bitten by an infected tick. In the days and weeks following the bite from an infected tick, some patients develop Bell’s palsy, or drooping and loss of muscle tone in either side of their face. Headaches and muscle stiffness will increase due to meningitis developing as well as pain and swelling in the larger joints of the body which can lead to a late onset of arthritis. Ten to Twenty percent of patients experience what they call PTLDS or post treatment Lyme disease syndrome which means that they experience symptoms that sometimes last years after treatment with antibiotics (CDC, 2013). This cause is unknown but there is no evidence that says it is because of an ongoing infection with the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

So what we know so far is that Lyme disease is typically diagnosed through physical findings of erythema migrans or bulls eye like rash with standard flu like symptoms that can be treated successfully with antibiotics. We also know that if the disease goes undiagnosed and untreated that you could end up experiencing lifelong effects like numbness, arthritis, and even paralysis. But the question still remains, what specific demographic is prone to this infection? Over the past 20 years or so, studies show, ticks that carry the disease have become increasingly common in Illinois. In Lake County, the first black-legged tick that carried the bacteria was found in 2006. Now 40 percent of ticks tested there carry the pathogen, according to the county health department (MCT, 2013). Early I mention that this disease is born from the bacterium borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Now the problem is that the vector can travel because it parasitizes animals such as white tail deer, mice, lizards, and birds that can migrate from place to place. There is no evidence that supports human to human contact will transmit Lyme disease. But since the parasite can “hitch rides” from various rodents and wild life, this makes quarantining and prevention a bit harder.

Let’s make it clear that there are no benefits to contracting Lyme disease. You will develop a rash, a bacterial infection that needs treatment with antibiotics. Have possibility for fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, hearth palpitations, Bell’s palsy, and meningitis are just some of the many consequences from this disease. Lyme disease is just as important to be educated as any other health behavior because it can easily go undiagnosed and result with lifelong consequences. Some cases go misdiagnosed as MS or arthritis and not all cases exhibit the typical signs. One target population for the disease would be people who live in Maryland, Maine, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. There is a great deal of concern for these people living in this area and traveling through. Some things to consider if traveling through this area would be for one wearing long sleeves and leaving the least amount of skin exposed. Using some sort of bug repellent or DEET on your clothing is also a good practice. If you have a backyard with grass, ensuring that the lawn is maintained and cut because there is less cover from vermin and there is less moisture for them to thrive.
