This is an assignment that requires you do something out of the ordinary and to experience it from a
different perspective. It is not intended to place you in harm’s way or in a compromising position. The
purpose is to increase your awareness of your behaviors, values, and attitudes concerning licit and illicit
chemicals and to help you experience the world of recovery for a day / night.
You must attend a social event that you would normally go to where people are consuming
alcohol and / or other drugs. You agree to attend this event for an entire evening and that it is
something you would normally go to with your spouse, significant other, friends, family, or
alone. Not drinking caffeine or consuming nicotine products at work does not count, this must be
a social event.
On this particular occasion you will agree to stay completely free of all licit and illicit
chemicals (such as the drugs noted on your Drug Logs; however, it does not include medically
prescribed medications.) If you are a person that normally is a non-drinker and non-user of illicit
drugs then you are to be free of all caffeine, sugar, & nicotine.
During the social event, pay attention to your feelings, comments made toward you, as well as,
behaviors and actions of others at the beginning of the night, middle of the event, and at the end
of the evening. Note what you drank and ate at this event, and comment on the choices. Lastly,
be sure to include something you noticed or learned about yourself (and your friends or family
members) as a result of doing this assignment.
Record these observations and impressions in a three page paper about 500 words per page (not
counting the cover sheet). Be sure to describe the venue and population of the event you
attended and your normal behavior and consumption. If your lifestyle is always free of alcohol
and illicit drug useage, make note of the reason you decided to live your life in a sober
environment and the drugs you have chosen to consume as a part of this sober environment.
If this activity proves impossible for whatever reason you may submit a three page paper
describing the circumstances that prevented completion of this assignment as stated.
