Homework 2
Due: Tuesday, July 16, 12 pm
Name________________________
Zitkala-Sa’s “School Days of an Indian Girl” (1900) attempts to characterize how her education in the East affected her, how it changed her relationship to her people (especially her mother), and how it shaped her relationship with whites. Her later essay, “Why I am a Pagan,” more directly addresses her reaction to fellow natives who have been converted to Christianity.
Choose 1 passage from each text. For each passage, write a paragraph in which you identify the key conflict, problem, or issue that she is exploring in that passage. What is at stake for her in that incident or story? Why choose to include it, out of all the events in her life that she could probably have included? To support your point, you should include a few quotations from the passage and discuss each quotation, explaining what you think is significant about it.
