Go to the Yahoo Finance website:

http://finance.yahoo.com/

In the upper left-hand corner is the “Get Quotes” section.

Type “Dow Jones” into the text box:

The web-site will suggest various completions for this entry. Choose ^DJI, the “Dow Jones Industrial Average”.

On the left side of the page is a link to “Historical Prices”. Choose that link.

The page has a control to set the range of dates you are interested in.

For this example, choose January 1, 1980 as the Start Date, and leave the End Date alone. (It will be whatever today’s date is.) Select “Weekly” data as your reporting period.

Press the “Get Prices” button.

The website returns a table with the price data for all of the dates in the range:

At the bottom of the table on the first page is an option to “Download to Spreadsheet”. Select that option.

What happens next depends upon your particular system, but in the end you will have a table of historical price and volume data for the Dow Jones Industrial average. You can use the “Get Quotes” option to get the historical data for a variety of companies.
