The Boston Family Shelter: Government Run

The Boston Family Shelter (Government run) requires the clients to attend 30 hours a week of schooling in order to remain eligible to stay in the shelter, according to one of the new shelter regulations recently proposed by the administration of Governor Deval Patrick.

As of April 1 this regulation would require homeless families to work or engage in specified activities leading toward work at least 30 hours each week to be eligible to star in a state-funded family shelter. Families also would be required to save 30% of any income each month. Currently if families have reached their income eligibility limit for the program they would have six months to stay in the shelter. The new rules provide families up to three months to stay in the shelter and to find subsidized housing.

The new rules would also deny access to shelter to families who have been evicted from public or subsidized housing in the past three years, deny access to shelter benefits for children if parents have outstanding default or arrest warrants.

The changes have raised concerns among homeless advocated and homeless families, in the midst of economic hard times and increase demand for shelters, they argue that this is not the right time to get tough.

Center for Men: Faith Run

The Center for Men in Miami offers a year-long residential Regeneration Program for men who suffer from various life-controlling problems such as homelessness, chemical abuse or addiction, medical and mental issues, illiteracy, and lack of adequate job skills.

The spiritually challenging Regeneration Program is based upon Judeo-Christian principles found in the Bible, and can accommodate 130 participants at a time.

Men who enter the Regeneration Program participate in individual and group counseling, various life skills classes, and attend the Miami Rescue Mission’s Jeffery A. Tew Education Center to improve academic skills as well as preparing for re-entry into the job market.

Emergency overnight shelter and transitional housing is also available. Transitional housing is offered for those who need help in relocating in the community. Emergency shelter is offered to anyone who needs shelter, a nutritious mean, a shower, and a safe place to stay for the night.

Save 30% of Earnings Counseling

The Government run homeless program is a little stricter than the Faith Based program in that it requires a client to save 30% of their income, the Faith Based program requires one to attend counseling.

The Government run program also denies people based on their past indiscretions with the law or who have been evicted from subsidized housing in the past three years, the Faith Based program makes no such exceptions.
