ASSESSMENT OUTLINE

Assessment title: A Critical Analysis of Aesthetics Applied to a Chosen Theme

Course name: Aesthetic Expressions

Weighting: 50% of final grade

Project Overview: This project is an opportunity for you to assemble the various disciplinary approaches applied in the course and to use your knowledge to critically evaluate a range of works in order to illustrate a theme of your choice.

Overall aim: To appraise a range of art forms and genres from a number of perspectives including historical and cultural context and setting, supporting your opinions with arguments relating to artistic identity, aesthetics and influences on the creative process.

Learning outcomes:

1. Examine a range of materials, compare and contrast interpretations.

2. Discuss various forms of aesthetic expression, presenting arguments relating to historical, cultural and social context.

3. Evaluate and criticize a variety of works from a range of genres with a view to presenting a structured, cohesive argument.

Organisation and methodology:

The chosen theme should be thoroughly analyzed in a detailed paper offering the reader a context for the theme in aesthetic terms as well as an appraisal of the influence of other disciplines on artistic representations of the theme.

A range of art forms and genres should be offered as examples and critically analyzed for their role in the public perception of the theme.

Assessment tasks and weighting:

1. Evidence of an understanding of the chosen theme as it is represented in a variety of art forms and genres, presented in its historical and cultural context (40%)

2. Critical analysis of the artistic values and impact of the works given to illustrate the aesthetic expression of the chosen theme (30%)

3. Communicating effectively in writing, written structure and accuracy (30%)
