Written Assignment – Redesigning Corrections

 Throughout this semester we have discussed numerous aspects of the American corrections system. During most lectures, we have discussed various pros and cons of different policies, practices, or procedures and considered the numerous challenges that are faced when trying to implement correctional strategies in practice. For this exercise, you will be required to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the correctional system in the United States and, when applicable, make specific recommendations for reform. To receive credit for this assignment, you must first respond to the following questions. 

1. What are some of the biggest strengths of the current American correctional system (e.g., public safety, effective deterrent, cost-effectiveness)? Why do you think these are strengths What evidence might be used to support your claim that these are strengths?
2. What are some of the biggest weaknesses of the current American correctional system? Why do you think these are weaknesses? What evidence might be used to support your claim that these are weaknesses?
3. Is there a clear mission/purpose of the American correctional system? If yes, what is it? If no, why do you think this is so?

At a minimum, your response should be no less than 1, double-spaced pages in Times New Roman 12 font.
