Here’s  a fairly open topic: Many of the problems that lead to the Terror in  The God of Small Things arise from a confusion between small things  (finding a moth) and big things (being recognized by the British  Academy). As much as one might love a small thing (a kiss, a present),  it doesn’t necessarily mean anything without a big thing. Does a kiss  mean Love or a Vile Debasement? Choose a small thing in the book and  trace its path through the meanings that accrue to it, for better or  worse. What can you tell me about the ways people engage with the world,  their fellows, their own pasts, their cultures, etc. from this path?  (Are big things conscious or unconscious?)  If you like, you can use  this example as a prelude to thinking about how such thinking and  behavior works in the world around you. You could choose a recent  example or something historical.

The novel is called ‘The God of Small Things’
