“Organizational behavior (OB) is a field of study that investigates the impact individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness” (Robbins & Judge, 2017, p. 10). OB monitors specific elements of behavior within a job such as productivity, absenteeism, turnover rate, management, performance, and more. By understanding what effects that people, groups, and specific elements have on a business and its employees a manager can make necessary adjustments to improve the environment and make it more efficient and effective (Robbins & Judge, 2017, p. 32). There are many different things that can affect a workplace. Management that does not have interpersonal skill levels can be very damaging. Having leaders that provide motivation and direction to their employees, who maintain an order or level of safety and legality within the office, who make connections both within the organization and network outside the organization are key elements in a company. These roles are necessary to clearly define workloads, provide safe work environments and motivate the employees, and establish a presence within the community. When discrimination is allowed within a company employee morale will decrease, fights will ensue, people without necessary skills can be awarded positions, and the negativity will ultimately create an unhealthy environment. These environments often see a large amount of turnover in staff. I can tell you from direct experience that not only does this affect the productivity of the office but it also changes the way the community responds and supports the business. Our company is still healing from bad leadership. We experienced a turnover rate of about 80 percent in both our employees and customers. Once we replaced our figurehead and she regained the trust of the employees, the company turned around and the community has slowly followed. “Interpersonal skills are the tools people use to interact and communicate with individuals in an organizational environment” (study.com, 2018). Without skills such as problem-solving, decision making, open communication, and negotiation a leader will not effectively lead a company to be its best!
