Compare Javanese and Balinese Gamelan in terms of function and use. How do there differing functions

affect their musical styles?

This film will help give you insight into the Balinese gamelan tradition and ensemble called “Gong Kebyar.” Pay close attention and take notes on instruments, music characteristics and cultural beliefs and values specific to the Balinese Gong Kebyar. Consider the following questions below when working on your essay.

1. List a few instruments specific to Balinese Gong Kebyar (different from the Javanese gamelan). Give short descriptions for each.
2. Describe your understanding of the term kotekan.
3. Describe your understanding of the term banjar.
4. What is one important observation that you can make about Balinese Gong Kebyar? (Think about the connection between culture and music, comparisons with Javanese gamelan, or about perceptions Americans have on the culture and music)
