1. In your own words, what is “Orientalism”? You can use a short quotation if needed.

2. According to Said, how does “Orientalism” help us better understand U.S.-Asia relations? What does it explain that other analysts have missed?

3. Why, according to the Tchen reading, did the founding fathers of America care so much about Asia? Were they “Orientalist”?

4. Tchen talks a lot about Chinese art and porcelains, the China trade, and the influence of Confucius on Americans. Which one do you find most interesting? Why?

1. Pick a reading by an individual Chinese or Japanese from which you learned the most for Asian impressions of America. State the author, title, and page number; why did you find this most informative? 

2. As we saw in “Orientalism,” Americans’ and Europeans “exoticized” the Other. Do Chinese and Japanese, in your view, also “exoticize” Americans? How?

3. How would you compare Chinese and Japanese responses to America? How are they similar? Different? 

4. Identify at least two concepts or quotes from the readings that you would like elaborated in class and why.
